View Full Version : most sensitive snare head?

i'm looking for sensitivity on my snare...

of course, it depends on the snare and wires, but is there a head that would be more sensitive than others?

i've got a 5.5x14 Black Panther (maple)...

Well the most sensitive would be a Remo Diplomat over a Remo Diplomat Snare Side. However the Diplomat Batter isn't going to be very durable at all. I use Diplomat Snare Sides for the extra sensitivity and absolutely love them. They also help to dry out the snare as well due to the extra snare response in the mix.

Possibly remo renaissance heads. I havent actually played on them, but my friend told me they are kinda sensative.

Ditto on the Diplomat snare-side. Put something like a coated Ambassador (or Evans/Aquarian equivalent) on the batter side and you have as sensitive a setup as you're going to get.

I use Coated CS w/black dot underneath over Diplomat Snare Sides and love it. That's some what close to an Ambassador/Diplomat SS combo.

i'll try that....Diplomat Snare Side 'hazy' or 'clear' though? what's the difference?

and what about Fiberskyns? are they focused on warmth more than sensitivity??

There is no difference. All Remo snare side heads are hazy, except the marching snare side heads.

I have a Renaissance head. It's pretty close to the Ambassador. I haven't done a scientific side by side comparison but if I had to guess I'd say the Ambassador was more sensitive. As a practical batter side head, I think the Coated Ambassador (or other brand equivalent) would be your best bet. Snare side head has been pretty much covered.

Also, don't tighten the snare wires all the way. Keep them a little loose and they respond a little more, though maybe less crisp. Also finding the right tension for the heads is key. Too tight and they won't be as sensitive. Too loose it will sound like a dying frog. :)

Of course there are the sticks and the way you play to consider as well.
