i just switched out my heads with aquarian performance twos. i hate them!

what are the heads that peart uses on the 30th anaversary kit ? what did he use in the r30 dvd? they look like the dw stock heads???

what are they were can i get them and if i cant what heads come really close the them ?

and are they one or two ply ?

I assume you don't like the Aquarians because they are dead sounding?? I think the DW heads are single ply and they are made by Remo.... I think. I'm not positive about that but I read that somewhere.

If you're looking for a head that sounds like Neil's, Performance II's are the absolute wrong head to use because they're designed for low, dead sounding tuning. Use something like a Response II.

You can probably order the DW stock heads from a DW dealer but you're not going to get Neil's sound. Even if you had a DW, a lot of his tone on the R30 comes from how he is EQ'd.

The Remo catalog I have lists him using coated Ambassadors batter on his toms and a Powerstroke 3 on the kick. google http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neil_Peart#Heads supports this info. Yes, Aquarian Performance II's, totally barking up the wrong tree.

That's true, but on R30 he used stock DW heads.

Seems to me if Neil has been using Remo Ambassadors for a decade or more, and the DW heads are made by Remo, it would probably be a pretty good "close" alternative.

He was using coated Ambassadors on his first DW set (red w/brass hardware). When he went to the R30 kit he started using the clear with the coated ring. Now he uses the clear with coated ring with sections missing from circle. Coated Ambassadors on snare and clear PS3 on bass drum.

From what I know DW heads are essentially Remo Ambassadors as are a lot of stock heads. The DW ones I think are sort of between an open ambassador and a powerstroke head. Kinda the same way Yamaha Batter heads are Remo too. Aquarian Studio X might be close as well.

well going from left to right (standing behind the kit) i have responce II on the high tom thats mounted up high on a snare stand. and then the 13" tom on the bass drum has a performance two. and the floor tom has a performance two.
heres some pics on my myspace of them from recent shows. also on there is my version of der trommler. let me know what you think!
(also there is a tamborine on my high hat but the camera i took the audio from didn't pick it up. )

I would actually try going with the clear Studio-X heads then. As someone said above, those are the closest to the heads that neil uses on R30.

i think i will but... can i crank one of those up really tight on my 12" tom and not have it sound dead? for that tom i want alittle more overtones and ring than the other two.

From what I know DW heads are essentially Remo Ambassadors as are a lot of stock heads. .

My understanding is that most stock heads that come with new kits are NOT Ambassadors, even though "made by" Remo - they are cheaper versions made in China, like the UTs on all Mapex drums below the Saturn line. I got a Pro M kit and changed out the stock UTs, and it's helped the sound a lot. Check to see what you really have on any new kit you're thinking of buying.
