Hardware question

Once, my drum teacher told me to always keep your snare stands, cymbal stands, etc. and all their tighteners and etc. very tight so nothing falls off or starts slipping when playing.

I now keep all my hardware tight (except the tension rods).

Is this a good idea, or naughty naughty?

Yes, of course. You have to have everything tight so nothing slips or falls off.

Different pieces of gear requires different touches. There's tight. And there's overtight. You just have to learn, from experience. Overtight strips threads, dimples hardware tubes, makes stuff hard to fold up, impossible to loosen without a wrench or pliers. Generally over time will turn hardware into junk. If you have a snare stand (or whatever) that has a tendency to loosen over time, check it. A drum kit, though not as complicated as a car, needs maintenance from time to time.

I was just wondering if overtightening was good or not for the hardware, like if it wears it down or whatever.

harryconway speaks the truth, also don't forget that overtightening of cymbal wing nuts can over longer periods of time cause keyholing/cracks. Let your cymbal sway to some degree when you hit it.

Ditto, Harry speaks the truth. In addition to what he said.... A little lube will go a long way. The lube will allow things to be tightened with less chance of stripping, still a chance, but less of one. You'd be surprised how many drummers don't even think about this.....

Very true. You can get things tighter and yet less stressed if you keep them lubed. Things also fold up easier when lubed. I keep a mini-oiler in my mini-tool kit with my drum set.
