I got an idea last night that it might be fun to see what everyone's ideas for over-the-top drum finishes are. Please write the material and/or graphic name with a short description. Anyone who is artistically inclined is welcome to post a picture as well. Who knows, someone who works for Drum Workshop could be checking this out to get ideas...

My idea: bark
It would be a veneer made to look like the bark from any of the common trees (oak, maple, birch, etc.), complete with natural bumps and protrusions. Imagine, would there be any better way to express the materiality of the drum!?

Add some branches and leaves and birds perched on them...

Maybe even a squirrel or two...

http://www.ghostnote.net ;) We're pretty good over there about coming up with unique finishes. Current works in progress are a Sesame St drum with the characters traced from a coloring book for the guys 2 year old grand daughter.. a dragon themed one, and my personal favorite is one finished with the krylon faux rock stuff that was then sanded down smooth and cleared for a REALLY cool texture.

I saw one on Ebay that was covered in this lime green shag carpet like stuff and the hardware was colored orange. Pretty wild and fuzzy looking.
A great idea though would be using the reflector paint used on roads and street signs. The kit itself could be white for example but when a light shone directly on the kit, it would shine.

The floor tom would be looking across to the ESPN zone, etc etc etc

How about the "Buffalo Bill Kit" from Silence of the lambs and have the drums covered from the skin of fat girls....

"It puts the lotion in the basket...."

Just kidding of course....

I'd love to see someone make a velvet drum set. Like have the velvet just put over the wood. I think that would be groovy.

You all have some great ideas and most I would of never thought of. Recentlly I got the nerve to recover my old Yamaha Power V since it is about 16 years old and it has seen allot of bars in Houston, TX. I took of the black coating off and replaced it with 26 gauge Stainless Steel. It is absolutelly the best thing I have ever done for my kit. It actually feels brand new.

I guess this isn't too outrageous, but I think something like this would be pretty neat:

it's a screenshot from Google Earth of some mountains (duh) with the terrain topography turned on, creating an eye-catching 3D effect. It also makes for a great desktop background.

PS: Google Earth rules!

My friend and I had talked about rigging up lights to my kick and snare a while back using piezo pickups attached to the shells to trigger the lights on and off. He thinks it would be an easy thing to rig up but we haven't tried it yet.

You're using piezo's as the trigger? way cool!

If it works, send me a copy of the rig... I'd love to make it.

That's the idea. The most important thing is figuring out how to rig it to the shells without damaging them. I may need to just buy a cheap snare and kick from eBay to do this. I was thinking of using small lights in a tube wound around the shells. If I could find a couple of acrylic shells cheap enough, maybe just one light inside the shell itself. The end result should be pretty cool though- any time a drum is hit, the lights on that respective drum blink. I think it would be a great effect live.

My friend said it should be easy. We just need to set up a loop with the light, battery, and the piezo as the on/off switch. He's the electronic savvy one. I need to do a little research though.

That looks like a set the drummer from the childrens show "the Doodlebops" would play. It does look kind of cool. I would like that in black or purple.

A couple of years ago a friend let a local Drummer bring his Kit into The Shop so he could sell it.
In addition to the Custom Paint Job the Bass Drum was BIG, so big most who first saw it would invariably comment on how BIG it was before saying anything about the finish......................
