Whats a good head for that classic 60's sound

I'm looking for heads batter and resonant that would gear my drums to sound like keith moon/ringo star/mitch mitchell type of sound. I know these drummers had there diferences but they all had such noticable tones. I am playing on a set of yamaha stage customs around 5 years old. The shells are made of birch/mahogany. Any suggestions.

First thing most drummers who want 60's sound (budget allowing) do is buy 60's drums. The infamous thinshelled Ludwig (3 ply with re-inforcement ring) construction. Pearl kind-of replicates this in their Masters line, see here: http://www.pearldrum.com/masters.asp where your Yamaha shells are the more modern construction. That said, getting you "into the ballpark" soundwise, Remo Emperor heads batter over Ambassador reso. You could even try the Remo Fiberskyn3 or Renaissance.

The ever popular, widely recorded Remo Coated Ambassador. Typically in the 60's a lot of drummers were using Coated Ambassadors over Coated Ambassadors. However, in those days the Ambassador wasn't your typical 1 ply 10mil medium weight head. It was a 2 ply head made of a 7.5mil and 3mil plies.

If you want great durability, a warm full sound, nice attack than use the Coated Ambassadors. If you want the qualities of the very original Coated Ambassador use the Remo Vintage "A" heads

i'm REALLY interested in hearing the new Ludwig series kits that are the old 3 ply shells with the 3 ply rings. today's technology with the vintage classic Ludwig sound of 60's era drums!!!

Are you talking about the "Pudding" sound?

If so you could try evans Hydros, or maye pull a ringo and drape cloths over your drums and take the reso head off.

Hopefully the vintage A heads will come in different sizes. But then again, I'm worried about buying more Remo heads after a few of mine in the last order weren't round or were too small as they didn't fit the drums quite right.
