Anyone here find them selves making strange faces while drumming?
Sometimes when I speed Up and hit harder I pull some most bizarre faces...
I guess Its part of the passion of drumming...

Yea well if anyone says anything you tell em' "how bout you try and play some 4 way independence and focus on how your face looks..."

I find that if you dont make a strange face, it looks even weirder than if you do. Watching somebody play drums without anything happening to their face is less intertaning.

There's this one amazing drummer in my area, who plays regularly at this jazz club called Matt and Phred's called Mikey Wilson and the faces he makes whilst he's playing sometimes draws more attention to his face than his drumming. Either way he's a top notch drummer, pure intensity and gives it 100% everytime. He played on Corine Bailey Rays album as well. Whenever you happen to be in the UK and in Manchester, go to Matt & Phreds and check this guy out. If not for the drumming do it for the facial expressions.

I stick my tongue out a little and bite it sometimes, but I do that for anything I put effort into

Keith Moon ;)
Also, I've noticed that I like when musicians smile while playing, e.g. Papa Jo Jones and Eddie van Halen.

I remember watching my dad play, back in the 80's when I was a kiddo. He'd make some of the most bizarre facial expressions I'd ever seen. People might have laughed if he couldn't play...but he had pretty amazing chops...so no one really noticed. If anything, it added to the experience because he really felt what he was playing. I remember, more than once, he'd pull off a lick that was really cool...and he'd surprise himself...and he'd laugh out loud.
Ahh, the memories!
I know I probably make some weird faces while playing. I smile a lot...especially when I get in the pocket and the groove goes all the way to the bone. I nod my head to the rhythm, also...it's all part of that internal clock.

I was going to make a thread similar to this
I called it musicians face, and the idea was to get a funny picture of musicians and put a funny caption. My example from the Soul of the Funky drummers DVD, the guitar player.
Edit: hmm the quality of his face did not come through well, I need to find a clearer one. And now looking back on it, not really that funny. Oh well, maybe someone else can come up with a better one.

I used to suffer from jaw ache after playing the drums for long sessions, simply because I grit to hard...

The first time I saw this one drummer play (it was in a studio), I wanted to ask him where he went mentally when he was playing, because he was so zoned you could have thrown a brick at him and he wouldn't have noticed.

The biggest thing I try not to do is leave my mouth open. I look like a tool when I've got my mouth open playing. It ends up being this more concentrated look with my lips tightly clenched. Maybe that's not much better lol.

Lol, nice.
I think we should all post pictures, then again, how likely is it that we have enough arms to play and take a pic.....
Nutha, is that someone elses kit?

zoro is the man for the best drumming faces!!
ive seen some horrible pics of myself. but i think music has to be all about letting go.
even non musicians do it. sometimes you see pictures of people with insane expressions on their faces just dancing to music....
all i can say is, thank god ive never seen my "sex" face.

That is why they invented the video camera :P
Heh I too was about to start something like this. My playing face changes radically...
I've got the 'screaming like something's burning my ass' face, and the 'getting a nice back rub' face' and last but not least, the 'worse case of constipation you've ever seen' face. I think face number 3 usually happens when I'm playing jazz. The music of constipation as my brother so adequately put it. Apparently he has a constipated face too as a bassist. Or maybe it just runs in the family.
Here's a compilation of some of my playing faces.

I've been told I can have quite an angry face behind the kit sometimes. Its not really me being pissed off but rather just really getting into it.
I was once told by a female friend of a friend "I'll only come if you promise to do that angry act when you play and pull those crazy faces". I didn't let her down :)

Here it is, only being warmed up though, more of a jasonesque pout in this one. I've been told i do all sorts off stuff. My bass player stands in front of me and copies it during practice, the bastard.

I do that too. My Dad taught me that as I was just starting out, as a way of learning how to stop my right hand from tensing up.

I`m happy when drummers do their strange faces. They really express themselves and live for what they do. The moment...of making art.
I also have some pics, unfortunatly till now no pics exist with my extreme faces. lol

hahaha that's a priceless moment there dude, totally "carry on..."
I used to make the same sort of face when I used a 13" x 3" steel shell snare, it would make my ears bleed every time I hit it, it was cranked up that tight LOL doesn't quite compare to being smacked in the nuts with a stick though :-)
