Ive got a fusion jazz band, reggae is one of the hardest things to play. I know that everyone is telling me "Listen to more reggae, start from Bob Marley and then listen to Copeland" but does anyone know where can I find reggae tabs or scores?

Listen to more reggae....

Just kidding. I don't really know where you'd find tabs. I guess I didn't even know they did that for drums. I was looking through that Tommy Igoe 40 Groove Essentials book at a store and he had some reggae stuff notated in there. Maybe check his web-site. I would find one simple example and learn to play that, then expand on that idea. Remember keep it simple and solid.

Peace!

Listen to more reggae....
Peace!

Google: Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare. Those two are the royalty of Reggae Rhythm sections!

Then do more of what Garvin suggests.

It's very hard to find scores for reggae drumming. I've searched all over th net and found very few things. Honestly the best thing is find is listening to the music a lot. You can tell by listening careful that most of the drumming in reggae music is improvised. I really find the best way to approach it is by feel. Listen to the bass line and see what kind of rhythm should go with it. Seriously listening to it a lot is the best thing in my opinion because there are very few notated reggae rhythms out there.

As long as you play your kick on 3 (in general) your fine.

Why do you insist on learning this particular style from sheet music? The reggae feel (or any feel, for that matter) is best conveyed through listening to musical examples and imitating them, transcribing and learning them, and playing along to them.

With Reggae, most of the time, less is more. Kick on three, keep it swung and simple.

Kick and rimshot on 3, charley plays 1.3 2.3 3.3 4.3 triplet shuffle or whatever it's called. I think its the pattern called "one-drop". Crash cymbal drops after fill, but seldom on 1, before or after

4 kicks on the floor with same stuff for more bouncy parts or bridges too
