He was here in St. Louis not too long ago for 3 nights of shows and a clinic. I was lucky enought to attend both the show and the clinic. I agree with you.....he is an amazing drummer and just a lot of fun to watch play. Glad you enjoyed the show.

Good for both of you guys. Watching a drummer like Weckel had to be inspiring. I need to find an opportunity to see a great drummer in an intimate club setting. Thanks for reminding me to do so. Joey

Oooh, but you didn`t do that, right? I think Mike would have been pretty angry if you had done this...haha...
And you saw Weckl. Wait...Weckl and Stern together? Man, you are a lucky guy, that must have been a blast.
Mike is such a good guitar player and well, Dave Weckl is inspiring and just Dave Weckl. Awesome.

awesome!

Dave W. is coming to Drum Fantasy Camp in August, about 25 mins from my home.. I gotta see if I can scrounge up a few Ben Franklins to register for a One-day seminar there :)

Well, I have scrounged up my Ben Franklins for the camp, er "day pass", and got a room at the Ramada Inn for $103 /night. I plan on arriving by car from Vermont, Friday evening, and going to the meet and greet, and then concert (if I can still find a ticket).

Anyone else here going and want to hook up, especially anyone going by themselves? I hear the master classes are fixed at 15 students, so if you plan (or planned) on going, then it may be too late, although there may be other events and clinic stuff to go to.

I did not receive a ticket for the day pass, so I guess it is will call (drive up and give them your name and credit card #, etc). I hear the jam nights - where you and 90 other drummers get to play on stage for 3-4 minutes each with Vinny Valentino's band - are only for fantasy camp participants, NOT for one-day pass attendees.

Saturday morning, I will drive over to Seton Hall University where my class starts at 8 AM.

The "Pirate Dining Hall" is located at Bishop Dougherty University Center. You can find a campus map at:

http://www.shu.edu/visiting/

A little googling later, and you can sign up for meal menus from Pirate dining hall to be emailed daily to you (Ramada Inn has wireless internet). As well as events (like Sean Villere's Jazz Band plays every Sunday morning in the dining hall during brunch 10:30 AM - 2:30 PM). Since my checkout is 11AM, I think I will be going to check this out, assuming the guard at the gate will let me back in :)

After that, I will try to make it over to NYC for some sight seeing.

So who else is going?

This is a great time to meet other drummers and make friends!

Peace,

Steph
P.S. The jam sessions are only for Sunday and Monday nights. So it is feasible, if you fly in to EWR, to make the Sunday night jam session, and then fly back home for work Monday morning.

Oh, and Trip, I just realized you're the one who made one of the YouTube videos I watched a few weeks ago. If you want to meet up Sunday morning (8/19) and try to go to the brunch, then please let me know. I enjoyed your playing, and it would be great to chat some :) while watching the Sean Villere Jazz band!! Who knows, maybe you will get a day pass!!

Well, the drum clinic was a blast! I ran into Dave Weckl while getting my breakfast in the hotel lobby! Then, I took a class with him and another 30 or so drummers. Then I saw him play a concert with his DWB buddies, and it was so, so, so, awesome!

I ran into the kid from San Diego too. He's alot younger than I was expecting, but I introduced myself and mentioned drummerworld. It's amazing that not many people mentioned drummerworld while I was there. Some people had memberships but don't remember when it was the last time they logged on.

Met Gary, from Southern California, who stayed up late with me while we traded licks on my practice pad in the hotel lobby. Man were there drummers everywhere. If they do this again, next year, I am going for the whole camp.

Did I mention that I ran into Dave in the hotel lobby? Well, I ran into him again on the elevator, as I was checking out!! Talk about good timing!! I was afraid I had come all the way to New Jersey without getting a photo with him. Well I had my camera with me, so we got one! I also got one with Steve Smith in Jubilee Hall, which turned out better because someone else took our picture (with Dave I had to hold the camera with stretched out arm, and the flash was too powerful at that distance).

Well, that's about it. Oh, and Horacio Hernandez was a real cool cat, too! He taught a class on clave - Son Clave and Rumba Clave - and he had the whole class playing it together, and he would play drumset over the top of it.

Anyone else go to this?

Well you succeeded. I'm jealous! I've seen many of my favorites, but he's the one guy I really want to see live

Well, it really was that simple. I was hurrying to get over to Seton Hall, and I ran over to pick up a muffin from the breakfast bar, and this guy is in my way. So I wait for him to finish, get my muffin, and whoala, it is DAVE!!! I almost fainted!

And during the concert, when Horacio was opening for him, I was sitting in the very back row, when I look back and see Dave standing and listening, with his stick bag hanging over his shoulder. After 10 or so minutes, he sits down three seats over from me, and we're like the only people on the back row! I was too nervous to start a conversation going with him though. All I could muster was a silly nudge to his arm and a "He's pretty good!", pointing to Horacio.

Oh well. I can only dream what might have been. I plan to stay in touch with him though. Maybe take a lesson in LA. Maybe go to the next fantasy camp. Who knows!

But WOW and sorry to make you jealous :)

Yeah, I lesson would be incredible. He's supposed to be a very good communicator and great person to be around. Hope you get to take one.

But then... i'll be even more jealous!!!!: )
