ok, so i recently came into posession of an old set of luddies...sight unseen i bought them for the simple sake of them being ludwig's...the guy's a good freind and told me the drums colors didn't match but they are in good shape...so i bought them....come to find out...two of the drums have been sprayed with black spray paint but the other two are in great condition....i want to restore them but no matter how much i sand the black paint blead too deep....i would like to stain them, but it just won't look right because the black paint....what would you guys do?

Really, if it were me I'd wrap them.

The way it sounds, you can only paint or wrap from here.

How old? 3 ply, 6 ply...newer? What are the sizes? How mint are the drums that are factory? The best "probable" answer with such limited info. would be to wrap the painted drums to match the factory drums.

Well, if you wanted to do a stained finish, you would probably have to use a paint stripper to get all the old paint off. That can be a bit dangerous though. If you wanted to paint them, you could possibly prime and paint over the existing finish.

As stated above, i think your best bet would be to wrap them.

How about a nice vintage duco style finish? That might be fun. Failing that, I think a wrap would probably be your best bet.

i would say wrap them, if you try and stain them, and the wood isn't in next to perfect condition, it just wont look right. plus theres nothing wrong with wraps, its a garunteed nice finish
