Hi peeps, hope you're all still having a blast and learning lots on here.

I have been scanning through various threads that came up in the search and not really found what I was looking for, maybe I missed it...

I'm looking in to getting specific insurance for my kit as it has been gigging more this last year than previously, and I can't afford to replace any or all if it gets damaged, broken or stolen.

Do any of you Brits out there have kit insurance? which company do you use? what are they and their quotes and cover like.

At the moment my kit is partially covered under the contents policy of my parents house which covers it for their house, the practice room where it is mainly, and travel between there and my parents place. I am also not sure of the amount of cover there is on it.

Are there companies that specialise in this type of policy?

Any info or advice greatfully accepted.

Quick search on Google brought up lots so I got a quote from Allianz (pretty reputable)

I assumed my kit was worth £1500 (is isn't!) and for cover including loss from an unattended vehicle. Doesn't include heads and I'm not 100% certain if it includes gigging but the cost is £37 per year.

I think do a google search or even contact the company you parents already have insurance with (sometimes get a discount). Ages ago I remember the Musicians Union had recommended policies that were underwritten by one of the big insurance companies.

Thanks for posting, I need to check whether mine is insured under our house policy.

Cheers for that dude, you know what's really stupid though, I have google as my home page and I rarely use it, my first thought was to come here :-)

I have a word with the rents tonight and see what's what on their policy and who it's with

Don't know about the UK, perhaps it's the same as in the US.

Typical homeowners' policies will cover the kit in the house, perhaps on the road, too, but only for it's depreciated value.

However, many insurance companies will sell you any kind of insurance you want, if you ask them--it just may cost a lot.

For instance, I have all my trombones insured for replacement cost, not depreciated value. If one is stolen or destroyed I'll have enough to buy a brand new one with little loss. We have that as a rider to our regular homeowners' policy.

Contact a reputable insurance agent and see what he can offer you.

Whoever mentioned the Musician's Union is right. When I lived in the UK I was a member of the MU and obtained insurance on my kit through them. The MU will provide its members with those companies who are reputable and reasonable and specialize in writing the type of insurance you are looking for. In addition, if you make a claim and the Insurance company should make your life difficult the MU will negotiate with them on your behalf.

You do, however, have to me a member of the MU! If you are not, and you are gigging a lot and have the desire to make drumming your career join the MU as soon as you can. There are certain prestigious gigs that you quite simply cannot get without being a member.

Here in Canada all you have to do is get a rider put on your homeowners insurance. It cost about $20 a year.

Mine are on my Homeowners policy, but I have a 2500. dollar deductable so I would need to sustain considerable damage to be able to claim anything. As for the car if you are using them as business for gigging tyou may be careful with the car insurance as it may stipulate your insurance is for pleasure only and not for business. A bit tricky in the states anyway.

For all of those who aren't in the Musicians Union, try Clarion Insurance.

That's great guys, thank you very much for all your input on this, I do think it's worth spending that little bit extra on a specific insurance policy, as if there was any damage to my kit, or it was totally or partially stolen or involved in a road accident, there's no way I could afford to get the modern version replacement.

I'll let you know how it goes and who I go with and prices etc. when I get it sorted.

Thanks again guys

by the way, if you guys fancy a bit of live music, come along to Eve festival at the blue dog (on saddler gate in derby city) this sunday (22nd july). My band are opening, itd be cool to see some chaps from on here in real life!

tickets are £4 in advance or a fiver on the door, but if you do want to come ill put you down on an advance list so itd cost you £4 even tho youre buying on the door.
