Things to do with old skins

I don't feel like throwing my old skins away. I know you can convert them into muffle rings or something like that.

Are there any other things I can do with them instead of ditching them in the thrash?

if they are clear, you can put pictures in them and use em as picture frames.

I've got a tortilla press and the masa tends to stick to it. I cut old drum heads to the correct size, and they make great "non-stick" liners for the tortilla press.

Probably not that helpful a suggestion, but it does work!

If you have a school or local drum shop that wants them, you can donate them. Better than throwing them away.

I like to use them as holders......in case i have some spare change, ill just put it in the old skin.......or for my car keys.........stuff like that.........pile cds in them.........thats what i do

I can't seem to throw mine away either...I've got a heap of them in the corner of my drum room...some are "on display" on my shelf....mostly because I have nothing else to put up there.

I used it for a short period once to collect water leaking from my air conditioner. I didn't have a bucket.

Put an old head upside-down on your snare to get an (almost) authentic 80's "splat" sound. Works on toms too, if you need that cardboard-ish timbre.

I don't think so. With the tortillas, the masa dough is very stiff and holds its shape. You put a drumhead liner on the bottom of the press, set the masa dough ball on top of that, lay the top liner on the dough, then close the press to squash the tortilla flat. When you open the press, the liners peel off the tortilla slick as can be, and you throw the tortilla on a hot griddle.

The pancake dough is too runny for the liners to be helpful. I wouldn't try using mylar directly on the griddle. A cigarette will melt a hole in it, so I'm sure a hot griddle would wreak havoc!

Of course, I'm thinking there's about an 80% chance you were just pullin' my leg. If so, kick me twice and call me Aunt Sally. ;)

Why is it so hard to throw them away? I think I might have every head I've ever bought, even ones I KNOW I'd never use, even in an emergency.

Drummers just cant throw things out - our sticks and heads are part of our drumming, and we would be too sad to see them go....

I third the Frisbee idea.

I always throw out old heads. I don't gig so I don't have any reason to hold on to them, and I don't need them hanging around cluttering up my music area. There's enough of that already *lol*

mine was getting out of control too, so i had to thin the herd a bit.

it seems that drummers hanging on to their worn heads is a pretty common practice. i'm glad i'm not alone.

I can't imagine keeping old heads for anything. I take em to a music store that resells whole stacks of used heads. I usually buy "new" ones there too. Seriously I have too much other crap to want to hang on to broken heads and sticks. That's just me. I love all of these other creative solutions though. The tortilla press is by far my favorite, the rest of the food looks awesome too! Mmmmmm masa!

I tried going Frisbee with my heads but it didnt beat the cracked 12inch splash that the drum line threw around. Nobody caught it but it made the coolest sound when it hit the ground.

I have a winter stock pile but I am seriously getting tired of it. It takes up a large amount of space on my closet shelf that I am desperately trying to clean out at the moment. The majority of them I don't think I will ever use. I'm about to go through them all and keep one maybe two of each size simply for back up.


I'm actually surprised no one has suggested glueing two same size heads together with some rice (or whatever) in between to make shakers. I think I may try that.

If I lived in a place where it snowed I may try to use the bass drum heads as sleds. Well, I suppose I could always take one on the river. Hmm...

They haven't been used so they're perfectly transparent (slightly hazy but that doesn't matter).

That'll make one bluddy big shaker... imagine using 16" heads for those... whooo..

Tired of seeing those old drumheads sitting around. Want to do something about it? Then turn them into this----THE AMAZING 2-D SNOWMAN THING! Just take three drumheads (preferably white although you can certainly paint them) or decreasing size and stack them up. Give it a face and there you go--instant Christmas decoration that works well in windows or mounted on the wall. You can even shine a light through it to make your holiday season bright!
