Gettin Back into it advice please - heads for tama

Been playing on and off for 22 yrs ( mostly off ) so I jam with some buds once a week and decided to treat myself to a newer moderate aka cheap kit cause the old lady would skin me alive if I spent too much anyway to my question.... looking for advice on heads for a set of Tama Superstars cause the ones on them suck. Otherwise the kit seems ok for what I need. standard 4 pc. kit

Welcome back. Big question, what kind of sound are you looking for?

I like the sound to be for lack of better term "tight" not to boomy we play in a small area and mostly classic rock with simple rythyms etc. tight snare is very important dont need the bass to kill the heart in the back row you get the idea. I also mess around with a lot of big band jazz licks. Someone suggested Evans but i know nothing about them.

Evans is a good choice. Very easy to tune and wear well. Evans G2 coated up top, with G1 clears on reso's. For the snare Evans Genera Dry and crank it up. You will get a nice tight sound with that. That should be a nice starting point.

If you are looking for single ply give the Studio X coated heads a try on the batters but stick to the Genera Dry for the snare. Hope it helps. For classic rock the G2 combo should be a nice fit.

Remo coated Emporers over Ambassadors on your toms. With them you can get a nice open sound for the big band jazz stuff, and you can easily tone them down a bit for the classic rock. The new Remo Powersonic is a great kick head. For your snare Id use a Remo Coated CS.

there are going to be a lot of suggestions, but just to be a little more general, i would get coated batters (top) for the toms, and i think your stock bass heads should do the trick for now. Genera Dry for the snare batter, nice warm sound on that.

Stock bass heads, as Iron Cobra said, should be fine. A tip for tuning. Medium tight tuning on the front head, medium loose tuning on the batter, and a small pillow or something touching both heads on the inside.

I agree with most of this as I haven't messed with the Powersonic head at all; I tend to stick with what like which would be the Powerstroke 3 (clear).
