I have heard they are quite easy to make, but I was wondering what and how you make them.

Any pics as well??

Thanks

I "heard" this too. I researched it and actually couldn't find any examples of people who had done it an put any less effort into it than they would have making any other drum.

There's a really good link on how to make them. Although I don't think he mentions bearing edges, so you might want to find out how to do those. According to him and some people on some other forums, their octobans didn't have bearing edges and still sound nice.

I was going to do this myself, but I realized when I was looking for acrylic tubing that the price was per foot, which made the total cost a lot more than I wanted to spend. Good luck.

You could also make them out of wood shells if you were so inclined. As long as you used 8 or 10-ply shells and notched them properly (like concrete drain pipes, if you've seen them), you could glue the shells end to end to make a maple tube. Not that this would be easy, but then that's DIY for you.

he says he just used 220 grit sandpaper to round off the edges,

I think I may attempt one of these. Depending on how it comes out, maybe I'll get a whole set. I'll post if I make any significant progress

The hardest part is finding the right tubes. 6" tubes are no standard size for drain pipes etc. I've been looking into it as well, but I can't find the right tubes. Unless I wanna go for 8" tubing, but that might be a little too big to get that true octoban sound.

Another thing to bear in mind if you want to try and make your own tubes using more common and less expensive "sanitary piping"-

In the US pipe used for plumbing is typically measured "ID" or inside diameter. Drum shells on the other hand are definately "OD" or outside diameter. The exception is your super-thin walled SDR sewer pipe which requires different fittings all together and probabl would not make a decent shell anyway.

You should take a head with you to check whether it will fit properly on your standard supply house PVC and ABS pipe. (While 6" may be a *little* rare it can be found, and is rather expensive compared to 4").

I've never tried it, but it just may fit...

yes, the OD vs ID is a key factor, I ran into that in doing an experiment with some sort of acoutic-type wood-based type of tubing. just be away of that before you spend money on the tubes.
