What do you all think about a 14'' tom as a rack tom?
Im changing my setup because I'm getting a 16 inch floor tom tommorow, and I tried my 14 as a second rack tom and it is way too big..it just doesn't fit right. Anyway I decided to cut out the second and have 1 rack (12'') a 2 floor, cuz my sizes are 10, 12, 14, 16 now.
How many of you feel comfortable with such a large rack tom?

The most important thing is that you are comfy. At one time I had a 16" rack and 18 & 20 floors. The older I get, the lower I like my stuff.

Playing 1 up, 2 down, I played 14, 16, 18 for some 25 years. Now my kit runs 15, 16, 18.

Vinnie Paul from (formerly) Pantera had a 14x14 and 15x15 rack tom setup once.

I think it just depends on whether you are comfortable with it. I've heard of a drummer using a 16" floor tom as a rack tom before. If it fits nicely and you can reach it, so be it. You could always use the 14 as your only rack tom and throw it on a snare stand or something. I've thought about doing that with my kit after I get an add-on 18" floor tom.

Tre Cool uses a 10x14 as his main rack.

I did it once about 7 years ago running 10x12 and 12x14 over the bass and 14x16 as the floor. I have NO idea how I did it and was comfortable. I'm not a very tall guy, and I can barely get comfortable with a 9x12 over a 22" bass. My set now, I'm running an 8x12 over an 18" bass which after being risen off the ground is roughly at the same height as 20" and the tom is so low that if the bass was a 22", I'd have to raise it up a bit or else it would hit it. I guess I must be getting old too *lol*

It was nice having that big sound at the time, but it's too big for me now and the style I play.

I love having a 14 rack. I run a 3-up, 1 down set-up. On big shows I add the 18 floor.

Didn't/doesn't Dave Grohl use something like a 13x15 at a main rack?

I've often pondered doing a custom 14" tom ...... at about 9 or 9.5" deep....

or ....do this.... a 7x10, 8x12, 9x14, 16 floor tom....

I have the same sizes as you. I have a 1 up (12") - 2 down (14" and 16") set up. I find it the best configuration for me

I use a 14" rack on my big rock kit. I really like it, but it needs to be a little shallower. Right now it's 12x14, I really want a 10x14.

Personally, I'd forget the 14" for the moment and consentrait on getting an 18" floor tom! If it is a rock kit, you need a big sound! Currently the tom sizes:

10, 12, (14), 16
are all fusion sizes!!

10, 12, 16, 18
You'd be supprised at the difference a 18" floor tom makes!
