hello

after purchasing mapex pro m fusion and some bosphorus cymbals, I'm going to replace the stock snare <which isn't great> with something better. I was thinking about pearl omar hakim sig snare. I'm not sure about the sound I'm looking for, but I'm sure I'll tune it high. it should cover styles from jazz to some electronic to rock <but not too heavy, without walls of guitars>

so... are there other snares worth considering for that price tag or maybe something slightly more expensive? I'm sure there are :p I was also thinking about black panther natural maple 13/6 snare and chad smith sig.

what are your ideas?

I'll be glad for any input ;)

cheers

If your looking into that 300 range I would suggest checkin out a supraphonic for a wide range of tones, great for jazz but can be cranked up real nice for rock and so forth. I know this is one of my future purchases.

P.S. What line of bosphorus you run? I have 20" Med Traditional ride I love.(very jazzy)

Omar Hakim snare is nice, but I really love the Steve Jordan Signature snare from Yamaha. Great snare indeed. Very versatile.

I will never suggest yamaha, pearl, gretch, tama, or sonor for any type of snare drum. One the quality of the drum is low even thought it may sound good. second the amount of money you would pay for the drum you could get somthing of greater value and quality. third, you have to take into consideration the resale value. If i was wanting to have a snare drum with universal use, high leval of craftsman, and great resale value, I would go with DWs Acoustic EQ Snare. I have played one in a gig setting and what DW says is true.

The Omar Hakim snare a mean thing. The center of the head gives you a fat and dry sound, and rimshots are very piercing and loud. It's a great overall snare.

jayp, I'm afraid supraphonics are out of my range, as I live in Poland and can't buy it used.

I have master 21 ride and versa 14 hats. check out "my gear" section for pics of them. there is a thread called "my new bosphorus cymbals".

bruiser, DW is FAR out of my price range. I wish I can afford them.

what about black panther?

Obviously you have NO clue what you're talking about. Yamaha, pearl, gretsch, tama and sonor snare drums aren't good quality? You freakin kidding me? Go read a book and educate yourself.

well, I've never played any of them, but I've heard sonor high end snares are gorgeous. the sound of benny greb's snare, mhhhh... ^^

so, what's your type? omar hakim sig?

I'm really into the Steve Jordan Signature Snare from Yamaha. 4 play Maple shell. Beautiful drum it is. Environmentally friendly too.

yeah, but it's much more expensive than omar hakim sig. here, in Poland, it is priced the same as dw collector's snares.

I second the Supraphonic. It's a very versatile snare that can get you through any situation. I had an Omar Hakim a few years ago and I didn't care for it. It's a very open snare, with alot of overtones at the edge of the head, no matter what head I tried (which is what I found anyway). It wasn't controlled enough for me.

I would look into a Yamaha Musashi Oak snare drum. That's another great drum with a wide variety of tuning ranges and the quality is impeccable.

Bruiser - You sound like a DW snob to me, and the reason is because you just put down companies that make wonderful snare drums, ESPECIALLY Yamaha and Pearl, only to basically say "Go buy a DW Acoustic EQ". All of those companies make some very high quality snares, ones that can go toe to toe with the DW. You have your personal opinion on which you like better, but to say that they all make low quality snares is absolutely ridiculous.

Yamaha Signature snares are VERY expensive for the most part. They are great quality but I usually don't recommend them unless you have a large budget.

Hmmm, then, I would probably mention the Black Panther Birdseye Maple snaredrum.
