View Full Version : If stranded on an island...

Okay, you live on an island with a little hut, and a firepit. You got there by plane when travelling cross atlantic, bringing all your sweet gear over for your European tour. The plane, which you built yourself, wasn't infact, all that sturdy... While flying over this small island, you watch your right wing break off! Luckily, you're over an island, luckier still, you have a parachute. Most lucky though, is you have your bass and snare in a box, that is also attached to a parachute, so that it can come down with you. You have 30 seconds, 10 of which was getting the parachute, another 12 is used up for pushing the snare and bass box out the back of the plane. So really you only have 8 more seconds to decide what ONE other peace of your sweet, sweet gear is comming with you in the descent. You don't have much time, and the plane is also about to explode, (3 more seconds left) so what'll it be before everything is anihilated in the sky as you as you softly touch down on your new permanent home?

Sticks and bass pedal.
I know, that's two things, but they're small but important.

The answer is simple, you slow time to 1/100th of its speed, thereby giving yourself 5 minutes (you still moving in realtime, obviously) to collect and neatly arrange your gear for deployment.
You then take any other materials/objects that you desire and unceremoniously toss them down to the island, before calmly pushing your gear off, hopping down to the sandpatch and setting up. Lighting a morose cigarette as you wach the plane explode into flames over the vast ocean in slow-motion.....
What? Its a hypothetical situation, so hypothetically you dont know that this couldnt happen.

I think I'd grab a saw. But assuming that I sensibly organized things, and I'd snag the Elmer's Wood Glue and sand paper while I was at it. Don't know how to build drums, but I figure I'd have the rest of my life to get an idea. Authentic Date Palm drums....sounds like a great, new, exoctic wood.

When you have the bass and snare, the next natural piece to take would be the HiHats.

So, I have my snare in a box with stand, the bass in the box with my foot pedal and the drumsticks in my pocket.
OF COURSE I would choose my box with my Ride cymbal and the stand! That is actually the most important thing I do: Practicing the Jazz ride pattern and its variations....and of course playing it, just enjoying it. :-)
Seriously, that would be the gear I would really need.
Oh, and of course Wilson.

Well he said "gear", I don't consider sticks gear :) I would think that a bass pedal would be a given with the bass drum, but if we're going to get that picky we'd have to say that you'd need a snare stand.
Assuming that stuff doesn't count, I'd say the hi-hat.

well, if thats going to be my permanent home, screw it, I'm going down with the plane.
otherwise, I know how to fly a plane and land it in emergency situations, so the second parachute would hold all my other gear, and since its a homebuilt plane it means its relatively small and I crash land in the water and survive, so I'll take that option.
of course, if I was going on a European tour, it would mean that I would have a drum tech and all the equipment would be elsewhere- so hypothetically ask him what he would hypothetically do.

lol, I don't think it's surpising that most seem to want to take their hi-hat, but for me I'd say it's gotta be the ride. I need that WAY more than my hats.

A cymbal stand to use as an oar for my new bass drum-boat.
But in all hypothetical seriousness here...I would have to go with a ride.

The ride cymbal...for sure.
BTW, Could I use the bass drum as a boat and the cymbal as an oar? The show must go on, you know!
