Hey guys, I'm in the market for a new drum set and I've really been looking into getting an electronic one. I play drums in church, and I really think electronic would be the best way to go. I have around $600 or so to spend and I was wondering what you thought the best electronic drum set for that price would be. I found one on Music123 that is a SImmons SD5K (http://www.music123.com/Simmons-SD5K-Electronic-Drum-Kit-443369-i1170274.Music123)
I thought this was a pretty good deal, but I've never heard of the Simmons brand. Are they a good brand? If anyone has any information on them or has one and wants to let me know how they hold up please let me know! Thanks!

why do you think electronic is the best way to go? unless you are really concerned about keeping yourself quiet when you play, I would recommend getting an acoustic kit to start out. I am not saying electronic kits are bad, because you can get all sorts of insane sounds out of them, but it would probably be in your best interest to get an acoustic kit first.

I think simmons used to be big in the 80's. I dont think there's anything quiet like a acoustic kit & for gigging you would want to spend alot more money otherwise they dont really do the job. Ive got a yamaha dtxpress 3 as well as 2 acoustic kits. Although it has great sounds & is the best thing in the world for practicing i would not trust it at a gig.
Id go acoustic buts that my opinion. Roland & yamaha are the 2 big names in electric drums at the moment.

well i have an acoustic set right now..it's a cheap harmony set..but i've been playing on that for about 3 years now. i'd like an acoustic set, but i think electronic ones are better because 1. you can control the volume 2. they are easier to set up and take down 3. the tone sounds a lot better than what i have right now..and i dunno i just think it would be eaiser to deal with..but i love the sound and look of acoustic sets

Ok well i would recommend looking at roland or yamaha then as there the best out there (ddrums are amazing but cost thousands) That simmons one well i dont think it will cut it for ya. Checkout ebay for a bargain as vdrums arent cheap. Well good ones. You pay for the brain as well (the drum module) my yamaha has some very cool sounds & could fool somebody into thinking it was a real kit.

actually, an acoustic kit is easier to set up and tear down. for electronic kits, you have to wire the pads and stuff, and it takes a lot longer. no offense or anything, but anything you get would probably sound better than what you have now. I'm not trying to persuade you to get an acoustic kit; if you really want to get the electronic kit, by all means, get it.
EDIT: take a look at this link: http://www.drums-and-drum-sets.com/electronic-drums-vs-acoustic.php

As far as the Simmons goes, it's nothing like the drums of old and I wouldn't recommend it. $600 is not gonna get you much of an e-kit. And if you plan on giging out with an e-kit, you'll need an amp of some kind. That'll be another $600, at least.

A small acoustic is easier to setup and tear down than an E kit. Also, $600 isn't going to get you a very decent sounding kit. Two cheap mics on an acoustic and you're gold. And how much are these things really gonna move? The drums in my church haven't moved in probably decades.

Playing with dynamics, you can control the volume on a acoustic set also. You don't have to play loud all of the time.
