hey guys, i would love to see some pics of everyones dw kits.. by the way do they actually ask you what you want as a finish and wood etc. or like do they show you what they have and then you select it.. because i was thinking of getting a custom set from dw in the future
I custom ordered my kit, it took almost 4 months to get it here. They custom made them for me. My snare was'nt custom it was a popular dw Craviotto model

its amazing how dw has had the same lug design for so long, i think its time they offered a second option, but i guess having only one makes it more original

That's their signature. People see it and no right away that it's DW. I believe they did offer mini lugs at one time, but they don't any longer.

I heard that it took DW five years to get the design patent on this lug. I think that they will probably ride out the cost by keeping the lug design like it is. The patent by the way, opens any counterfeiters up to legal action.
I actually ordered one of my kits, white marine pearl with black hardware. It took about three months to get it. I remeber the day that it came in - I was thirteen all over! The other one I got a real deal on as it was used and the store needed to move it!

I got mine used from craigslist. It's an 89' snow-white pearl, keller shelled kit, which the original owner really took care of. If you're not set on ordering a kit, there are alot of really good used sets out there. The pic of the set is minus my 16x18 floor tom. I included a pic of the floor tom on a newly acquired cradle (bass drum). I also picked up a wrapped snare in plain white.

well, here is mine. 12/14/20 are keller shells i bought off craigslist for $1000. The 10" & 16" i ordered and had wrapped to match and they cost me $650 for both (i know an endorsee). S i got this amazing kit for $1650 -- not too shabby.
man do i love this kit!

If they're patented, why are you able to get very similar looking round lugs (I forget what they call them in reality) on custom kits?

I havev DW style lugs on my Hayman snare, but my snare is much older then a DW kit. I suppose there are differences which make the DW lugs, DW lugs which they have patented but there are obviously round lugs which have been around longer than DW.

are they any harder to tune than other drums?
Fat Elvis
07-06-2007, 11:08 PM
not for me. I think because their thread spacing being so fine, it is easier -- you can really get small adjustments very easily.

DW lugs are by no means original, they were first used by Camco. Here the link to the story that tells how DW ended up with the lugs : http://www.dwdrums.com/about/index.htm

for me the all-maple is more difficult to tune than the others ... don't ask me why.
maybe a matter of taste?

It is the design that they patented. So the custom kits may have similar lugs, but not the same design. If the custom kits are using DW's lug design, they are begging for a lawsuit. This is also why, on a hardware swapout with DW, you have to dissamble your drums first, send your old hardware back to them, and then they send you they new hardware. It is all about protecting the quality of the brand and keeping the brand confusion to a minimum.
I am suprised that the Yamaha lug design for the maple cutom drums wasn't patented for a design; they are turning up on everyones' kits.

The round lugs that are usually offered by custom builders like Precision Drum, etc...are Hayman style lugs. They are similarly gigantic but have more of a conical shape where the DW design is a series of stacked cylinders and discs (so to speak). The oval shaped Pacific lugs used to be on the Workshop series, but that has since become a PDP only thing now. A shame, since the PDP lugs are a bit more elegant in my opinion.
