Will putting a 13" tom on a snare stand work the same as a rims on it? I suupose you wouldn't tighten the basket or this could diminish the sustain. Suggestions would help.

From my experiences, yes. At one point I used to play my 10" off a snare stand and didn't notice any difference between the stand and the RIMS. I even had the stand tightened to hold on to the drum (it's hard to fit a 10" into a regular snare stand without doing that).

If there IS a difference, you may not even notice it. Some do, some don't. But you sure won't go from nice and resonant to noticeably choked, that's for sure.

I ran a 14x10 Vistalite tom on a snare stand for 25 years, no problem. A drummer buddy of mine with 10+ vintage kits runs rack toms off his flat based DW snare stand all the time. Never a problem. Right now he's got a round badge Gretsch kit set up that way.

I bounce back and forth. I can tell a difference between using a RIMS mount and a snare stand, but I like using the snare stand sometimes. I set mine up that the snare basket is barely holding the tom in place so I can get the most resonance out of it. You should have no problem.

It's in and has been for about 6 hours, but I've been delaying cleaning up my "music" area downstairs so I haven't gotten around to unpacking it yet. I will soon.

Need some help Rob. For a Gretsch set I'd be using my teeth. Can't wait to see your photos.

You can come over and help me clean :) I just wanted to get things organized before I introduced a new kit into the environment *lol*
