View Full Version : Big, Fat Peavy Drum Kits?

I was at a local ma & pa music store the other day and they had the strangest looking drum kit I've ever seen, in-person.
It's made by Peavy and has VERY thick, ply shells w/ big fat, rounded rings around the outside of the shell near each rim...the tension rods went through them. I can't really explain but it looks like someone took a donuts and stretched them around the tops & bottoms of the drums...very bizarre.
I couldn't help but be interested in such a unique looking kit. I didn't play it so I can't say how it sounds.
What's the story w/ these drums...anyone ever seen or owned one of these kits?

iv seen a guy at my school play with one of those sets in the band. it was his personal kit, and he said it was some custom. but hes most likely lying, so i dont have a clue of its worth.
however they do look bizarre!

Peavey Radial Pro is the type of the kit. They aren't made anymore. They had Radial Pro 500, 750 and 1000 series.

The rings at the top and bottom were to keep any lugs from penetrating the shell. These were good drums, but the market is pretty conservative.

I owned a wmp kit, didn't care for it too much......but it did roll really fast across the living room floor.

yes these kits were hideous - hence their discontinued nature
but they had a sharp sound - friend of mine was sponsored by them for a while and has three of their kits
lovely to play - just not easy on the eyes in my opinion

I'm sorry, don't mean to be too insulting but I knew a guy who had one of those and it was hideous. The plastic rings were not only ugly, but they broke on his kit and rattled and were just generally an eyesore. I hated that kit and was embarassed to have had a picture taken of me playing it. I can understand if the quality issues may vary and I'm sure there are people out there who liked em' but that's just my opinion. I get the chills just thinknig about that thing. Ughhh!

every now and again a design team comes up with something that sounds good on paper and is horrid in reality. here, to my mind is the car example of the peavey radial pro...

My experience with the kits is playing a snare drum. The ring also broke. It was a poorly constructed POS in addition to being ugly as sin.

Plastic rings? I didn't see no steenking plastic on the drums! The rings looked like blocks of wood...unless we're talking about a different kit here.
This is funny...because I kind of liked how it looked. It was the drum kit you'd expect to see on The Jetsons.
Anyhow, they've got a $3500 price tag on it...I doubt I'd even pay half of that. That's pretty typical of the store I was in; way overpriced and far too little variety.

Yeah, that's the snare I was talking about. Ugly. Don Brewer is playing some Peavey's in this video.

I used to work at a music store that sold a few of them. They did look weird, but the Radial 1000's sounded amazing. I couldn't believe how great they sounded. Yes, Don Brewer used them for a while when Grand Funk (the "original") got back together. I can't remember who else used them.

Roy Burns used them a while ago... I have an aquarian video with him and he demonstrates different heads on them..

I dunno...call me crazy...but I think they're cool as hell! I like unique things...I'd definitely buy one of these kits if I came across a killer deal someday.

The red kit doesn't look that bad. I played a show with a guy that had a natural one, it sounded pretty decent.
Also I saw that exact purple kit at guitar center in cincy the other day for 499.

My kit. I LOVE it! The looks you can discuss, the sound not! The sound is just down right awesome. I've owned Pearl Masters Custom and Premier Signias and I've worked in a drum store for 7 years, and I've never played a warmer sounding kit. The ultra thin shell and the radical design is working wonders. And mine isn't even the most expensive model they made.
Really really great drums. Check out any used Peavey radial pro's for sale.
