i have been thinking about tom sizes and how they would work with each other. i just read that the drummer of linkin park uses a 10" 12" 16" config. i also work with a guy that uses the same set up. so im wondering how the 16" would blend with a 10" and a 12"? i mean from the 12" to the 16" is 3 inche gap. do you all think that the 16 would sound out of place when played with the other toms?

from 12 to 16 is a 4 inch gap not 3. and probably better than 13 to 16 which is 3

The tonal interval will be bigger automatically if you still wanna reach the sweet spot. Again a personal thing if you wanna have such an interval.
I`ve got a 10", 12", 14" set-up. In Rock music for example you often use the floor tom as a ride instrument like hats, crash or ride cymbal. A bigger tom can produce a deeper and fatter sound than a 14" for example.
Just the question if you want something like this, will be definitly a contrast with a 10" and 12" tom, but I think if tuned well together it`ll fit. And personally I would prefer that in harder styles of Rock.

It will fit fine. Drummers have used four piece kits with 12 and 16 toms for decades. I've even used just 10 and 14 for a few years now and the gap difference is fine. Listen to the Zoro videos here on DW. He uses 10 and 16..that's a 6 inch gap and it sounds incredible. It all depends on how you tune the smaller tom so it blends a bit more tonally. Sometimes a tonal difference isn't even a bad thing. I actually like to have my first tom alittle more open sounding, and the floor tom to have really short sustain compared to it.

There are no rules. Well, except 12 to 16 is a 4 inch gap. Why not 10, 12, 16? Or 8, 12, 16? Check out Ray Luzier's http://www.rayluzier.com/gear.htm kit.
