View Full Version : Good cheap snare?
Hi, I'm new on these forums, I've been reading them for a while and people seem to be quite helpful and friendly here. Anyway, here's my question:
I was wanting to buy a cheap new snare to improve my crappy generic kit. I've been looking at the pdp 805 wood snare(comes in a variety of sizes) and the ludwig rocker snare(14x6.5). How do these rate and what snares do you think are the best in this price range (also what size would be good)? I don't play any type of music in particular, I've been playin a few years and have been wanting to upgrade. Also I live in Sydney Australia and drum equipment here costs quite a bit, it ends up being much cheaper to buy from the states and pay the extra shipping, do you guys know any retailers that ship internationally?
Cheers.

Ckeck ebay for a Ludwig "Acrolite" snare. Good sounding snare, but it is not a wood snare, it is made out of aluminum.

I agree on the Acrolite. It's a great snare for the money.
I have a Saluda 4x13 10-Ply Birch snare that I'm selling. Look here and scroll down http://drummerworld.com/forums/showpost.php?p=322979&postcount=101 It's $110 + shipping, but we may be able to work something out.

Acrolite is the only acceptable answer. ;)
Seriously, they're practically free on the used market, and if you can't get a decent sound out of one, well, it's not the drum's fault...

Not to go off topic here, but an Acrolite and a Supra (depending on the model) are both Aluminum right? So what is the difference?
How does the acrolite compare to the snares i mentioned?

Not a brand new snare, but some of the older Yamaha Chrome snares can sound really, really good.

The shells are identical, the Supra is chromed with ten lugs, the Acro is unfinished (or maybe clearcoated) with eight lugs.

There are Acrolites with finishes, I have a black sparkle one.
