After many years of drumming and relentless wasted nights tunning drums. I finally feel as though I have developed the ear for tunning the skins. The trouble is with all the choice's, do we drummers want the warmth of a 2ply coated or the attack and clean true tom sound of a 1ply clear. Over the years I have come to the conclusion that it comes down to your style of music and also group issue's tend to influence. For the life of me though= 2ply or Single ply?

I love the sound of singles.....my problem is I hit a little too hard....still love them, it just costs more to play them....LOL

hard to say, it really does depend on the brand/model/drum/etc, i have 2 ply on my toms and they sound great, and today i just bought a single for my snare, and it also sounds great. i think the way you tune it will make it hard to tell how many plys it has. close your eyes and just listen, you probably wont be able to tell the difference, exept for your music store bill.

I personally like the resonance single ply achieves over a more dull or muffled sounding 2ply.

I use double ply heads for RAWK, and for anything else, singles all the way.

PS. It's "tuning", with no double Ns.

I have switched from double to single ply heads recently. I prefer more resonance. Seems more natural sounding.

I prefer 2ply heads for more a more deeper fuller tone & added durabilty

Thanks for the great response. I love the feel of the Single ply but the added warmth of the 2ply is for me I guess.

I've always hated the feel of two-ply heads. I'm not sure why they are so thick these days. The original synthetic heads were 2 ply with a 7mil and 3mil plys. Now 2 plies are about 7mil each. Personally I'm liking Fiberskyns myself. I've got these all over my kit now after trying Evans g2 coated and Aquarian texture coated. They are a sort between in terms of sound. Great heads. I definately recommend these if you cant decide between 2 ply and single ply. After all they are both since they are a single ply head laminated with the fibers.
