Welcome to Drummerworld. Shorts and a tank shirt mostly, here in So. Cal., unless the venue/gig dictates I wear something nicer. Winter might force me into long sleeves. Usually jeans only if I'm playing with a blues band.

I generally play with knee long short and a thin t shirt, no sleeze, they distract me, and trousers tend to get caught on my bass drum pedal.

I can stand to wear any kind of shirt, even long sleeved ones. A few times, I've even worn a hoodie -- granted, it was a brisk Fall night and we were playing outdoors.
But as far as essential go, unless I'm playing a proper gig, I prefer to wear shorts. I find pants/jeans to be uncomfortable when I'm at the kit.

cant wear pants, cuz the beater for the pedal gets stuck underneath, then i end up pulling my leg into the bass batter. so i wear shorts, and a t shirt

I used to have that same problem. So irritating. I wear shorts and a t-shirt now too. And I look terrible while doing so. :)

Drumming with no sleeves = no good. Come on, when did this whole thing come about? Have some class and wear a suit or at least something with sleeves!

Does anyone else just wear socks (sans shoes)? (Well, not JUST socks if you know what I mean)
Plus, pant leg cuff clips that bicyclists wear to keep their pants from getting caught in their chains also help with bass pedals getting caught in pants.

For the most part, I wear full suits. I play in an 50's birth of rock n roll band (think Bill Haley, Treniers) and sub in a 40's jump blues band (Louis Jordan, Nappy Brown) - and we're all suits and ties, baby! By the time we've finished a show, I think I've lost half my body weight in sweat!!

It depends on the gig: music, bandleader preference, indoor / outdoor etc...
I play alot of Jazz so it's mostly slacks/long sleeve or shortsleeve button shirt.
I can usually get away with the classic black jeans and loose shirt ala Pat Metheny.
I do not have any particular shoe preference but i will not play in any type of boots.

I like to mix it up, sometimes I'll wear opposite of what the feel is for the songs. If the songs are pretty laid back I might wear a shirt of a band that's known for hard rock. If I am playing something more demanding I might wear plain clothes. = )

That's how I play when I play Metal. When I do the softer stuff (no need for double bass) I don't mind playing with some light shoes on.

I dress according to the venue.
Only rules - if I'm wearing long pants/jeans, they have to be LONG to prevent the beater getting caught in the cuff. Also, I wear Chuck Taylor-type thin soled shoes. Some guys I play with nicknamed me Mr. Rogers because I change shoes right before I play.
Hey, maybe I should start wearing a cardigan, too...

I wear t-shirts/jeans all year. Sometimes if the gigs in the summer and I know it's gonna be hot, I'll wear shorts. I always wear shoes for shoes. I usually wear socks when practicing at home, just cause I don't wear my shoes around the house.

It all depends on the temperature of the place I'm playing, which is usually at my pad.
So...
Fairly tight fitting short sleeve shirt, loose fitting pants (not baggy), socks and low cut Adiddas shoes.

I wear what I wear everyday; either jeans and t-shirt, or athletic shorts and t-shirt. If it gets too hot I'll go sleeveless or shirtless. However, if I'm playing a gig, I wear my vans slip-ons, because I don't like going barefoot for gigs, and the slip-ons still give me a good pedal feel.

A t-shirt and jeans or shorts, depending on the time of year. No shoes, either socks or barefoot. I've worn hoodies before and not had too much of a problem, except I'll start to get hot despite the cold temperature.

I have the wierdest of images when drumming now!
I have eather to baggy or to tight (wearing baggy stuff takes a hell of a lot of getting used to as your bass beater can get stuck in your trouser leg)
usually baggy trousers
pink tight leapord skin tee-shirt with an insult towards my self on the back!

For gigs, I like to dress up, the more exotic the better. I can't stand seeing musicians wear jeans and dowdy clothes. You're supposed to entertain the audience and in most cases, that means dressing differently.

Interesting, most of you guys discuss shoes, sleeves, or suits, but not many of you mention gloves. For me, its all about comfort, T-shirt, loose shorts, a bandana to hold the sweat, since I sweat like a swine in the roaster, a pair of sweat stained Mechanix Wear gloves (that I'm planning on replacing, since the grip's not too good) old Nike running shoes, and socks. Oh, and ear plugs. Never underestimate a good pair of ear plugs.

Don't gloves have a certain connotation, like they're used mainly for playing butt rock? They seem like an affectation and if you practice enough, calluses will develop in the right places.
On the other hand, people wear all sorts of specialized gloves for everything from surgery to skateboarding, so why not drumming?

I typically wear shorts and no shirt. Stage lights and smaller stages usually equals a TON of heat. That's typical for venues around here.
This holds true if it's an outdoor gig and it's warm. If it's cold I tend to layer and take off layers if I need to.
In drum corps I also just wore shorts and no shorts. Sometimes I would wear just boxers if it was hot enough, which most times it was. As for christmas parades when it easily hits -20 to -30c which is -4 to -20F I wear a lot of layers and keep my hands down at my sides when I can to keep the warm blood in them. Nothing is worse than trying to grind out 32nd note rolls at absurd tempos in those temperatures. I refer to that as "parade hands" and it hurts.

This is a pretty old thread I guess. Still fun to share I suppose.
I just wear a plain ol' band t-shirt with pants. But recently! I tried drumming without pants and it was the most comfortable thing ever. I've been just wearing pants for gigs, or videos. So maybe if people don't get creeped out so much maybe I can make it permanent!
TheGroceryman
08-28-2008, 02:44 AM
LM201 i dont see what the big deal is, i mean people cant even see your pants from their perspective and why would they be curious enough to want to know what your wearing on your legs. maybe you could just get behind your kit, then while your sitting down, do a quick change while no one's looking. ha!
LM201
08-28-2008, 02:48 AM
Ha. Well maybe you're right, it's not like anyone pays attention to me anyways! But seriously I've tried it at gigs and people always notice somehow. Maybe the next video I make will be pantless. You never know

I drum naked. It's very comfortable. Some of the clubs insist that I wear a jock-strap, but that doesn't bother me too much. I always keep one, a jock-strap that is, in my cymbal bag.
And I always I wear a pair of Doc Martins or, failing that, a pair of those rubber boots that fishermen wear. Those go on my feet, you see, because I get great traction on my pedals with that type of foot-wear. Plain old rubbers like your mother used to make you wear work too.
Of course I also bring a bathrobe, it's a powder-blue Ralph Lauren, monogramed with my initials, to wear between sets.

Hmmmmm.... I thought I saw you playin a gig a few years ago, but this guy wore his Docs' on his hands, and held his sticks with...well, nevermind.
But talk about TECHNIQUE! He played with 4 sticks, had a killer grip, and when his solo came- I coulda sworn I saw 6 sticks goin at one time! And of course, he was playin on those "FybreSkin" heads, I seem to recall a short conversation with him about how he felt "really close" to his set, and when I asked about blisters, he calmly replied "I have callouses". But when the break was over, well... the robe came off and I suddenly felt the need to cleanse my brain with thoughts of Ludwigs, Zildjians, and Aquarians. Interesting...I thought he was the only one. Normal gigs black short sleeve shirt, sometimes a different colour (or long sleeve rolled up), black trousers. Extra special gigs, black tux (damn uncomfortable if you ask me).
Serious question pertaining to dresscode. Has anyone ever played a whole gig in cowboy boots?. How do you feel after, did you have to adjust the pedel, what did you do?.....I mean in the line of making it more comfortable to play with boots.

If it is gonna be a normal temp night then I will prob wear some t-shirt and shorts (more than likely one of my UA shorts), I always wear UA socks, and my Nike Free shoes(had them for over a year)
When it is going to be hot or humid night (50% of the year) I will wear UA shirt, and UA shorts.
That stuff is Amazing! I love UA gear, to bad it is so expensive, but WELL worth the price for what you get. I first started getting UA gear when I was in Highschool and playing Lacrosse, and I wear it almost anytime it gets hot down here (75% of the year) =P
The stuff is great you should try it!

The truth is, while most people argue that clothing is a necessity, unlike eating, drinking, and breathing, others have to teach you to wear clothes.

Nice and warm where you are, is it, Morkel? :)
I need to wear a bra onstage or no one's going to watch the singer. My current band is still new and we've only done one gig so far. We plan to keep dressing semi-formal for public work. Trouble is, you can't really play drums in an evening gown and definitely not in a LBD! So it's black top and slacks for me. I wore boots at the last gig. For summer I will definitely be taking bringing flat sandals because heels and pedals don't mix.
Ah, for the old R&R days of tank tops, jeans and bare feet *sigh*
And Salicete and Rickinrider, you can have the thongs ... stinky, unhygienic things they are! How can anyone wear those things?

Personally, I play with pants and a surplus Canadian army jacket on. That doesn't bug me like it bugs a lot of people.
But I hate wearing shoes when I play! I'm serious. Something about a quarter inch of rubber between my foot and the pedals makes it feel awkward to me.

I personally like to wear an all in one wrestling suit. Banana yellow colour is my favourite! I've recently adapted it to include two stick holders that attach to my back so the sticks point up in a 'V' position. Handy for them stick breaks!

Nothing special besides my gloves and my headphones. Heck I would even drum in my underwear if I had my own place.

What an unusual choice of stick! Is that a 28H or something? Perhaps a new triplet execution method?

dont wanna hijack the thread, but i didnt wanna start a new thread, only to be told to search it.
my always wants us to wear short jeans(just enough to get caught on the beater) with white button-up long sleeve dress shirts.
if i can get a good enough arguement why this is really stupid for a drummer, please answer.

The wife and I sometimes jokingly muse (we're both bicyclists) about putting a clipless system on the pedals and using out bike shoes
I'm just studying drums (not actively performing outside of hootenannies) so I don't need stage dress
but I like to wear synthetics (polypro, etc) for moisture wicking and they are comfy over a wide temp range -- it's a habit I picked up from activities where cotton is the enemy

I will always but always where my Southend United football shirt at gigs.
I get alot of banter from West Ham United / Tottenham / Arsenal / Chelsea / and even the plastic Manchester United Surporters, but following our team is a tribal thing, so will always were my football shirt.

heres my favorite outfit to drum in:
-MAYBE a headband
-no shirt, if i have to wear something on my torso its a tshirt w sleeves cutoff
-gym shorts no longer than knees, i love my underarmors...
-no shoes, no socks. if i have to, nike airmax180s are the shoes of choice.
-usually an armband
i play tennis too, so i just take headbands and armbands made for that and drum with them, helps with sweat control, and i have long hair, bangs included.

i used to dress REALLY casual with cut offs and doc martens, or converse with no socks, whatever t-shirt was on the top of the pile. Then I saw pictures of me in a group of roadies and stage hands and you couldn't tell the difference between me and the roadies.
so now I try to dress at least better than the staff so I actually look like an artist.
Right now in summer I wear nice shorts, like golf style shorts not pleated! with a flat front, and a polo shirt, or something short sleeved with a collar on it.
In cooler months I wear dark jeans, a button up long sleeve shirt with the sleeves rolled up.
I wear hats all the time because I have a shaved head and I sweat alot, so I have lots of different hats I wear.
for shoes I have a pair of clarks dress shoes that are nice to play drums in, but I also really like to play drums in adidas sambas so I wear those when I can.
