Howdo. I've just started looking around for a new kit (I currently have a Premier APK, and am looking to upgrade with a good quality 'jazz' kit).

I really like the look of this kit, and was hoping someone might be able to tell me what it is?

Hope someone can shed some light (drummer pictured is Todd Trainer from Shellac)?

That would be a Ludwig. It looks to be from the sixties.

Well, I'm pretty sure that's a ludwig, based on the badges and the lugs. Gretsches badges are either stop-signs or circles, and their lugs have a smaller profile. (ooh, i got beat to it! thaaanks, porker.)

Despite what some may say.. the Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz kit, despite having mahogany shells, is a damn good kit with the right heads. It might be worth looking at if you're trying to spend less than $1000. If you want to go over $1000, the ballpark is a little more open as far as kits in jazz sizes.

.

There is no specific kit to look for. Any kit can be a jazz kit, not just one with like an 18" bass drum (Infact, most jazz drummers use 22").

Any kit could be a good quality jazz kit, don't just look for one with jazz in the name, or has a small bass drum just because it has the jazz stereotype.

What is your budget? Are you looking for a top of the line kit?

Cheers for the quick response. I've had a look at the Gretsch Catalina Jazz kit online, but I'm up for spending up to $1,500 (£1,000?) I guess, so can probably go beyond that kit bugdet wise. Problem I've found, being a novice when it comes to drum kits, there are so many to look at, it's hard to know where to start.

1500 can get you a nice kit, but if you save up to somewhere in the 2000-3000 range, you can get a reallly nice top of the line kit.

Since you liked that set, check out Ludwig's fab 4 Silver Sparkle, really classy.

If you don't want to save up, you can get a Pro M Mapex, which I believe are the best of the midline kits

Dude, if you want a nice bebop kit in the 1500 price range check out the Gretsch New Classic line. These are amazing drums. They also can be pre configured with the classic bop sizes. 18x14, 12x8, 14x14. If I had that kind of bread right now to throw at a "jazz" kit, there is no way I would do that fab four kit. The Gretsch wins in all categories for me.
