The clips that are floating around from this video seem really interesting. I was thinking about buying this DVD but im not sure, cant seem to find much about it on here. Is it recommended? Anyone know what it involves? If it helps im looking for a DVD that will get me going with funk, I'll proably buy this one day but any suggestions on funk x

In my Opinion "Up Close" is horrible. The clips you see flaoting around on the net are the best parts of the video. Throughout the video, Gadd just looks like he doesn't want to be there. I wonder if he was just moody, sick, high or annoyed by the interviewer.

By far the most boring drum video i have seen.

i second muckster here. very disappointing. bernhard has chosen the best parts. also beware of buying 'in session' which is even worse. i hope gadd collaborates with a great though lesser known drum teacher one day and they put together something a lot more gadducational.

Phew, I'll keep my money then! What can anyone recommend for a good funk start then?

I recommend Soul of the Funky Drummers by James Brown's drummers, Clyde Stubblefield and Jabo Starks. It's not really an instructional video, but it shows alot of their famous grooves and talks about their individual styles. Some may not like it and want something more indepth but I do.

I don't think Up Close is a bad DVD, yeah it's not that in depth, and the interview definately looks bored, but it still gives you a good look at Steve's style and technique for those who aren't as familiar with him.

it depends on what kind of funk you are aiming for. i have and love 'red hot rhythm method' with chad smith.

mostly because chad is a maniac tho.

another dvd worth checking out is 'accelerate your drumming' by larry finn which i feel in some ways is superior to groove essentials. larry is a berkley professor and the camera angles are very clear.

Rick Latham and Mike Clark both have funk DVD's as well, along with David Garibaldi's VHS/DVD set.

Speaking of Chad Smith's DVD, I remember I wanted that for Christmas, and my musician uncle would usually get me drum related items for christmas. I specifically asked for this VHS when he asked my mother what I wanted, but he didn't get it because if anyone has noticed, Chad is wearing a shirt on the cover where a big tough guy has a little guy in a headlock and he's saying "Gimme back my lollipop or I'll kick your ass!" My uncle purposely didn't get the tape for me because of the bad language *lol*

kool, I wanted something that could get me going with funk really. Up Close will be good for me one day maybe, maybe even not as an instructional but just a kool DVD. Are there any good funk starters?

I think Up Close is fantastic, but I seem to be the only one here who thinks that.... Well - the main reason I think that is because Gadd quite obviously is totally high as well as the interviewer and it is funny to watch them. But there are also many Gaddisms to capture and learn so for every Gadd fan that Video is a must.

Back in these days I believe Steve was quite a high flyer and I am happy he has left that path years ago.

I agree, you can learn alot of the DVD even if it's not as instructional or in depth as some people would like. You're getting a rare glimpse to see a legend in action from behind the kit as they talk about some aspects of their playing that have made them famous. You can take away alot of that.

Thats kool then. Are there any beginner DVDs for funk? But decent ones, I dont want to go down the cliche route of beginner DVDS but they are lacking a bit

I agree that Up Close is great. You can get a lot of grooves and licks from it even if the explanation of them isn't the greatest. Same thing goes for In Session. I've gotten many licks and sticking patterns from that aswell. It's good for the Steve Gadd fan or anyone looking to expand their playing.

Agree....
I think its pretty funny watching him all sauced up trying to explain things...

Not an instructional DVD but very entertaining....
Get the book if you really want to learn something....

I'll probably get it because he is a drummer of the times and an inspiration as we have all said (and it'd be a good laugh!) but what about begginning funk?

I second that opinion. I think the Finn DVD and his book, Beyond the Backbeat, are some of the best things out there.
