Yes, 22 feet is way too big.
It all depends on the kind of music you play and the sound you're looking for.

20 and 22 are both fairly standard. There will be a difference as the drum gets bigger, but it's not that huge of a deal unless you know exactly what you want.

I have a 22 x 16 and don't find it too big. Maybe for traditional Jazz but not for all around use. IMHO

Depends on what you want to play. 22" is the smallest size I would use for rock, and makes a good "all around" size. Some folks use 20" for rock, too - I have, but I prefer a bigger drum. If you mainly play jazz, maybe a 20" or smaller would be well suited.
hey thanx 4 the advice.. i manly play rock, so maybe that will guide u a bit better.. Wat i the difference in sound between the 20' and the 22'?

20" has a lot more attack and a more snappier sound. (ideal for jazz/pop/rap/drum & bass)
22" has a bit more bass to it and does require a little muffling. (This is ideal for rock/jazz)
24" has more bass and has a bit of rumble, this requires a little more muffling! (This is ideal for metal/jazz)

I have a 22" now, but only because I got such a good deal on the set. If I had to choose, I'd go with a 20". It's more responsive than a 22" but can be tuned to have as much low end as a 22" AND be tuned higher than most 22"'s will go without sounding bad.

A 22" will do fine for almost anything.
Id recommend it.

22'' bass drums are ok!
I use a 20'' and that's the largest size what I would ever want! If you're gigging a lot - smaller drums are easyer to move around and that's a BIG pluss for me!

In a fusion setup (10;12;14) I would go for a 20".
And 20" is sertainly good for rock.

i would suggest the 22", its verstile enough that you can use it in various situations. In terms of genre, its great for rock since you can get a lot of boominess if you want, or muffle it up and just get a solid whack. My experience come from a Yamaha SCN 22", which, as you may have already gathered, is a great bass drum which may also bias my opinion towards this size. In the end it all comes down to hearing them so if you can get some side by side in various depths then all the better.
