Snare Head Suggestions

I'm looking to replace my snare head. I'm looking to pick up a batter head that is coated with good response and that will actually last a while. Any suggestions?

What style do you play ?

Are you a hard hitter ? Kind of stick ? Any preference in snare tuning loose medium high tension ?


My all around snare head is from Aquarian, it's the satin finish texture coated and you can have it with powerdot, the head last longer. Then if you're an hard hitter, there's the hi-Energy which is very praised among hardcore punk / metal drummer. If you like your head already pre-muffled there's the Coated studio-X with Powerdot (light muffling) and the Focus-X with Powerdot (heavier muffling), finally for a very light playing and amazing snare response try the Aquarian Modern Vintage.

Other than Aquarian, my choice would be REMO ambassadors or Controlled sound snare batter (CS) or fiberskyn III diplomat (FD) or Evans G1 or genera High dry (HD) or J1.

thanks! yes the search function helps but not for specific questions. For some reason it splits up every word you put in the search function and gives you a million results of all kinds of stuff :(


Anyway, I use 5a japan oak drum sticks. I play rock, but incorperate a lot of ghost notes and things like that, so something with a good response is key.

Then cant go wrong with Aquarian satin finish texture coated w/ powerdot or Remo ambassador or Evans G1. The three of them have about the same characteristic but maybe the Aquarian coating is little bit thicker which some see it as too much thicker head but in the long run the Aquarian coating last longer. What I like about this head is it has the best of both world single ply head with little bit more depth and warmth.

Can't go wrong w/ a coated ambassador...I just put a new one on my Craviotto...LOVE it. You won't be able to wail on it though...they're single-ply...so make sure it fits your style of playing.

In my opinion the Remo is the best if you want to replace it again and again. We all know the old Remo coating does not last long but sounds sweet when new! Try the Evans G1 Coated. It last four times as long but sounds 1/3 less. The choice is yours. Choice wisely...

Yeah I also highly recommend the Aquarian Satin Finish. I've never used one with a power dot, though, so I don't know about that head. The regular one is a really, really good head, though!

Also, I am somewhat fond of the Remo Ambassador for a certain "open" sound.

Evans ST coated lasts forever, and sounds great, with wonderful response.

Evans G1 coated or Power-Centre Reverse Dot (or Remo, Aquarian, or Attack alternatives).

I prefer single-ply heads and find that durability isn't an issue since I've started gripping the sticks a lot looser (ala Staton Moore.... Love his stuff). I was wailing before to some Clutch stuff and had no issues whatsoever with my G1 coated. Soon to put them on the batter heads on all my toms too.

I use a number of different Snare Heads but am liking the new Remo Ambassador 2-ply, which is currently only available in 14". The standard 1-ply Ambassador comes in at 10 mil (thickness) with the new Vintage A the roughly the same thickness, only it uses 2-plies, a 7.5 & 3 mil.........................

The Vintage A is designed to duplicate the first Ambassador Head Remo offered, hence the name Vintage-A, it even uses Dupont Mylar just like the original did. To me it seems to be a very nice cross between a 1-ply Amb. and their 2-ply Emperor..........
