View Full Version : How close are you to your Dream Kit?

DrumBuster

I know there are alot of threads on what your dream kit is but this one begs 2 questions....

Have you got your dream kit, just what you want?

or

How far away are you from your dream kit?

This will be interesting to see.

Also post pictures of your dream kit... Just so we can be nosey.

Well, considering I'm using a CB set, I'm pretty far from my dream kit. I have found the perfect set-up for me though - 1 up, 2 down. My cymbals are pretty close to dream status. I have almost enough money to buy a Saluda Diamond crash, but I haven't decided between 18" and 19". My UFIP Class ride is on the way and if it's as good as I hope, I'll have my dream cymbal set.

I finally got my dream kit last year. Im still tweaking the cymbals to work for the styles of music Im now playing and I need to add some electronics, but Im pretty much all there!

Im pretty far. Im using a Pearl session. I would first want to upgrade it to a top of the line gretsch, Pearl Reference, or Tama Warlord exotic set (costs 6500$, only 100 of em were made). Also, i would upgrade my hats from B8's, to Zildjian K's or Quickbeats. I would possibly have an A custom Ping ride instead of A Medium Ride (id have to compare). I would upgrade to an HHX 8" evolution splash. I may add a roc n soc nitro in there too.

Lots more stuff, im just naming a few.

Edit- Oh yeah, i did pick up a new 14" AAX Studio crash a couple hours ago. Its great, and matches the cymbals i have quite well!

I already have the cymbals I want - Zildjian K 20" Flat Top Ride, 1970s 18" Crash, 1950s 14" Hats.

My drums aren't even close, though. At the moment I'm playing a bottom-of-the-line Sunlite student kit. My ideal drum set would be a maple Yamaha 4-piece in classic jazz sizes.

My kit is just about the setup I want it at right now, but I want a lot of my stuff to be changed and I want some more cymbals.
I like everything I have, don't get me wrong, but I would like just to have something, like if I got sponsored (right).

I want a Meinl 22" Extra dry ride to replace my Dream 20" ride
I want a Meinl Mb20 18" Crash to replace my Paiste 2002 16" crash (I really like the 2002, but I would really like to have just one brand)
I want a Meinl Mb20 8" Splash to replace my A Custom 8" splash
I want a Meinl Byzance set of high hats, probably 14" to replace my Staggs
I want a Meinl Byzance China to replace my wuhan china
I want to add a Meinl Byzance Ride to put on the right side over further than my main ride

I'd love to have a Starclassic Bubinga kit in fusion sizes to replace my Stagestar. My pedals are the ones I really want I think, my favorites I got to play.

This really makes me look around and think about how thankful I am I have any of what I have at all, the stuff is so expensive. I'm proud to just get to drum, this is just a limitless money type of situation.

I would say I'm not too far a way. I have two acoustic kits, and an electric that I will continue to upgrade individually.

Right now I'm focusing on my big kit (Tama Superstar). I want to add an 18" floor tom to make it a seven piece, and a few more Saluda cymbals including one more crash, one more ride, one more set of hats, a few fx cymbals and a couple chinas. There will be space over my left side floor tom that I may put Octobans or rototoms or something. I want to get a double kick pedal as well. That will be my monster kit. hahah

My second acoustic kit is my Slingerland kit. I want to try to find matching toms for it to make it a four piece. Then I will buy a couple more vintage Zildjian cymbals to finish it off.

Then I have my Roland kit. All I really want to do for it is buy a mesh pad for the snare, and upgrade from the TD6 to at least a TD12 or maybe a 20. I figure by the time I get to the point of upgrading this kit, the stuff will be so old I'll be able to pick it up for real cheap. hah

I don't think I'll ever be able to afford or justify the cost of a DW, or some nice custom kit unless I build it myself. That's why I just want to focus on upgrading what I have. I did buy a cowbell yesterday. Woo!

I wanna twin bass Luddie, 24x18s, 13x9,14x10, 16x16ft,18x16ft, supraphonic snare, 2002s; sound edge hhs, 16,17,18,19 crash, 10 splash, 20 ride. Kit in green sparkle....I've got a set of rolands td3s, I think I could only be farther away if I'd never played before....

Bought mine a couple of years ago, Sonor Designers VML 8 piece in Blue Roots finish, Sonor 600 Series hardware, DW9000 Pedals, mostly Paiste cymbals, with a Zildjian or two for good measure.

I'd say pretty close, I just want a 20" bass drum for my vintage Luddies, maybe a 13" tom, and I need to save for half of a cymbal before being able to get the hats and 3rd Bosphorous ride for the kit. But I've wanted a Bonham kit set up with 2oo2's for years. Of couse I'm never going stop dreaming about gear but that's a good goal for now.

All with remo ebony pinstripe heads

Those sticks make me sick, not literally.

They are really badly balanced and too weighty.

How far away are you from your dream kit?

a few thousand dollars and many many objects...
put it this way- Tama Swingstar 5 piece w/factory cymbals... that explains it in itself
I love the kit, but its nothing near the kit I want

(oh and I do have a TD-6SXT, but still, I wouldn't mind a TD-20 and I need a monitor and speaker system for it.......)

I've got a long way to go.

Sadly, I will never get my dream kit although I keep dreaming. Hell , 5o years old, two kids in college one more in the wings on a Firemans salary. You do the math......I'll just keep playing my Ludwig accents. There is a bright note here...ALL PAISTES BABY!!!!!

Well my dream kit would be a Yamaha Maple Custom or a Tama Starclassic B/B in 22,8,10,12,14 and 16 floor, but I'm never going to get there.
I do have a Mapex M-Birch, which I will get around to posting pics of one day, and when I upgrade the skins on that it'll be satisfactory until something breaks, at least.
I'll get a double Pearl Eliminator pedal someday, and upgrade all my cymbals, and then maybe I won't be at my dream kit, but I'll certainly be at a kit that makes me happy :D .

I'm somewhat building my dream kit slowly. (my first kit being an electric kit)

Currently i have:

-DW Collector's 2000 Maple 14" x 5" Natural wood finish with black hardware (i don't like chrome)

-DW7002 Double pedals

-Zildjian K Heavy 20"

Currently working buying a set that's a 70s Pearl set for $80 CAD
13" 18" and 22" from the given specs. I'm checking it out hopefully tomorrow.

Along with some extra hardware like a
Sonor Hi-hat stand
Tama Snare stand + Cymbal stand for another $80 in total.

I guess I'm at the 10% mark for the "basic" dream set up

My dream kit would consist a collection of cymbals from the Zildjian K line plus some mix of Sabian perhaps.

Drums i'm not greedy as I prefer have more cymbals over amount of drums and i'd probably only have 12" 16" 18" toms and a 22" bass that's a DW Orange set with Black Hardware. :)

I need to get a job, etc etc... But, I swear, once I finally get that kit, it will be the envy of the entire world.

And it will have no tom-toms.

I kind of let go of the idea of ever owning a vintage ludwig. :[
But, i do own a vintage kit that I will soon pics up (some time later)

I think the only thing keeping me away from my dream kit are some K Customs (hi hats, crash, and ride) and some drum heads for all 4 drums.

I'm very far. Everytime I think of what my dream kit would be, some company (usually DW or Yamaha) come out with something new that makes me go... "ohhhhhhhhh, I want that."

Dream kit is a fleeting passion in my opinion. Cuz eventually you will want to upgrade. I could be wrong.

Yamaha Maple Custom in Green or Violet Sparkle and with Wood Hoops:

12x8 Rack Tom
14x14 Floor Tom
16x16 or 18x16 Floor Tom
22x16 Bass
13x6.5 Steve Jordan Signature Snare Drum

Cymbals are a toss up:

14" K Hats (Have them)
22" Paiste 2002 Crash
20" K Ride (Have it)
22" Paiste Traditional Light Ride

For those of you who are Steve Jordan fans, this looks very familiar eh?

Hmm.. Let's see.

1 kit (SQ²)
2 snares
1 crash (Saluda)
2 chinas (Saluda)
1 set of hi hats (Saluda)
A stool (Roc n Soc Nitro)
1 set of LP Granite Blocks (I just think it'd be fun)
And maybe some splashes or chimes, who knows

Luckily I've already got several cymbals I'm planning on keeping forever. Of course I'll have to replace my Zildjian ride when I get endorsed with Saluda, hahaha.

I'm one cymbal away from my dream cymbal setup, but drums? I don't think I'll ever have one dream kit.. probably 2-3 kits that would be my equal favorites, and I'd use for different applications.

Both would be Yamahas: Absolute Maple Nouveau, and a Manu Katche HipGig. And for sheer collector's value, I'd like to have a Club Jordan Cocktail kit.

Mhhh, I think that we never have our perfect kit...or? I mean, being happy with one particular kit for an infinite time? I doubt that this is possible.
Technology develops and so do drums, producing, quality, sound, look. In my opinion will there always be kit which impress you more. earlier or later.
Often in life we get bored by a sound, a look, we want somethin different, we change our choice.
Two years ago I thought I`d have my "dream kit". I bought a Superstar Custom, 22" bass, 5-piece.
I already played Jazz (Bop) and after times I noticed that this isn`t the "perfect" kit: Now I wanna sell it and wanna buy a small 4-piece, Sonor Force 3007. I lost the opinion that a real "dream kit" even exists.
It more like a "current dream kit".

That is the reason I won`t commit to one kit or one type of cymbals.

Currently I`m waiting for my dream kit. Sonor Force 3007 in Autumn fade, 16" bass, 10", 14" toms, 14x5.5 Snare in blue sparkle or red sparkle...my cymbals are awesome...just want a flattie but other than that it`s "perfect"....for now.

Check out my thread in the Your Gear section. I feel I'm pretty close, although I might want sloshier hats, and maybe a different ride, and definately another crash. I suppose if I had a drum gear generating magic wand I'd have Starclassic Bubingas, or even an exotic-finished DW or Sonor, but the differences would largely be cosmetic.

well, I'll put it this way and anyone can figure out if I've reached my dream kit yet... this is my current kit. It's a 5 piece Export with basic additions (DW5000 double b ass, drop clutch). I'm ALMOST there! I just want an 8"x7" tom for my MCAN's, and a 24"x18" kick (or a 26"x12" but Yamaha doesn't make one!) I'd throw that in front of my floor toms on the right side, and run it off a slave pedal.

Otherwise I'm pretty much there... check out "My Maple Yamaha's" by Mr. A.C. Perkins in YOUR GEAR on the boards, Mr. A.C. Perkins is my other name on here... TedTheDrumGuy is me doing this when I should be working! lol!

Well I would say I am there. I would like some extra drums so I could go between a couple of set ups depending on my mood or what band I am playing with. My set up now is:
Trick Drums in a candy apple blue with black rims and lugs
18x22
9x10
10x12
14x14
And a cool mix match kind of finish for my 7x14 snare. Blue hrdwr and nat aluminum shell with S hoops, 30 strand snare wires and of course the 3 way trick throw off.
All tama hardware except for my Axis but prob. soon to be trick pedals. Cymbals you ask? SABIAN SON!
14in AA Metal - X hats (some times 14in aax stage hats)
18in hhx o-zone (soon to be rocktagon.. thats right old school!)
20in AAX china
18in vault
17in vaut (17in cymbals have a very strong attack, check this cymbal out!)
19in paragon china (my fav china of all time!)
22in aax metal ride
19in aa Metal X crash (use to crash/ride on)

I kind of want a 18x20 and 16x24 kick so I can do all kinds of crazy stuff. also a 12x14 and 16x16 and 16x18 so I can do a little Nirvana set up (though he used 13x16 16x18 and for a while 18x22 but the trick drums sound huge already so it would be hard to control) But now i have to run and pick up the van we got for 300 bucks and take it to a mechanic!

I'd say I am. I'm through with thinking of what my "dream" kit is and just focus on what I'm happy with. I buy less gear that way.

Gretsch New Classic in Ivory Marine Pearl
14x18 Bass
8x12 Tom
14x14 Floor Tom
6.5x14 Gretsch Hammered Black Chrome Steel Snare

Bosphorus Cymbals

18" Antique Med-Thin Crash
20" Stanton Moore Trash Crash

I think some day I may like to add an 8x10 tom but that's about it. A set of GMS CL Subway would be nice too but I won't push it :)

I think I'm pretty much there. Although I've been eyeing some Pearl Reference Series in Granite Sparkle lately.

I've played my dream kit for about a year.

At some point, however, I would like to upgrade from A Customs to Bosphoruses unlathed, hand-hammered.

i have my dream set for live and touring already. I have one old pearl boom stand that I want to replace with a dw stand and everything is set up. I also still have my first hi-hats zildjian quick beats and while they sound perfect to me (the only hats i've ever used) they are really old and dirty and sometimes I think I should get a new pair just so everything looks good. unless i can find another pair of hats that sound better to me.

I would like to own a gretsch round badge kit but i wouldn't take it out on the road or to gigs unless i had a road crew and full flight cases.

I wouldn't mind a 14x14 3 ply ludwig tom in green sparkle to go with my ludwig kit.

the funny thing about drums is you are never done

My Dream Kit:
Ludwig Classic Maple in White Marine Pearl wrap
14x22 Bass (Virgin w/ Heavy Duty Curved spurs)
8x12 Tom
16x16 Floor
LM402 Supra (Tube Lugs, P-86 Throwoff, Die-cast rims)

Hardware:
Trick Pro 1-V single pedal
All Ludwig hardware

Zildjian Cymbals:
21" Armand Ride
14" A Mastersound Hats
16" K Dark Med. Thin Crash
18" K Dark Thin Crash
10" A Custom Splash

Percussion:
Pearl JIngle Ring
LP Black Beauty Sr. Cowbell
LP Jam Block Blue (High Pitch)

Out of all of this, I have only the Cowbell, Jam Block, and the A Custom Splash. I will soon have the Armand Ride, Pearl Jingle Ring and my LM402 snare (hopefully before the end of the year).
Soooo....No, I'm not even close, but over the next couple of years, I hope to finish my personal masterpiece.

Man I'm just a kid with no job or source of much income. I also have very low quality drums, hardware and cymbals. I'm just trying to save up to get a new B8. I don't even know what my dream kit is. So lets just say I'm 100% away from my dream kit.

I'm a lot closer to having my dream kit than I am to having my dream chops...

currently I've got Starclassic (Birch) 5 pc Bop kit and I'm happy - maybe adding a 20" and/or 22" bass drum to have a choice there and adding a 16" tom is all I'd want to change.

then again - there may be 2 or 3 snare drums (like a 14x6.5 Black Beauty, 13x7 maple, and maybe a 14" x 8 G Maple) I'd like to add to the arsenal too, but again mostly to give me more choices.

Cymbals are another story - I definitely could add some more choices there - some sloshier hats, a drier ride like a Sabian 21" HH Raw Bell Dry Ride, one or two more splashes and a few more choices for crashes and maybe one or two crashable rides on top of that... ...the cymbal list could go on for awhile.

I would love to move up from the Renowns to a set of New Classics, or USA Customs.
The New Classics are closer to being attained than the USA Customs but still a dream.

Hello,

First of all, be proud of your actual drum-set - mine it's an intermediate/medium level. Write down on paper, the specifications of your desired kit and put it on the wall, or get a picture of your favourite drummer's set, and make it your goal...I Want It.

Good luck,

All I need is a DW Brass snare, some electronics and another cymbal or two.

I got my dream DWs at the start of the year, here's a pic from recording my band's album:

Far, far away. My kit would be filled with Sabian cymbals. (HHX, AAX, and my own sig line close to Paragon!) Drum's would be Tama (Omni Tune Bubinga or Starclassic Maple) or Kumu, a drum-maker company in Finland. All drum's handmade and pre-ordered. http://www.kumu.fi/
The snare would be my own sig line of course.
But as I already said, it's still far, far away...

Yeah i was thinking of getting them to make me a kit, they sure are nice! And £1350 might seem like a lot but for a custom kit, it's not bad really. I mean for a 3pc that's sort of new SC performer money and you're getting a handmade kit with exotic ply shells that were moulded with the actual exotic plys on there in the first place, making them extra nice.

My "dream setup" changes on a very regular basis - pretty much taking the identity of the kit played by whoever I'm listening to the most at any one time.

But anyway, at the moment I'm very far away, seeing as I do not even know the brand of the drums.... lol.

Anyone wanna ID this? (http://www.dailymotion.com/related/x94d9h/video/x94cwr_criss-cross-chris-dave-trio-live-at_music?hmz=74616272656c61746564)

Well, I have my dream kit...I first saw the Orion Chocolate about 2 months before it came out. I think it was when they announced it at NAMM. I got mine in april last year, and it's awesome. Of course I want more cymbals, another snare, splashes and so on, so I'm almost there...

Good luck,

Well ya i got the drawings down, on sabian they have a set up builder and I'm fighting myself between 2 or 3 choices, 1 bass drum or two, how many toms, auxillary, number of snares. Ive pretty much got the cymbals down but its the other stuff thats killing me. But I am proud of my kit, I'm just saying at times I cant stand the sight of it.
