haha...really really like your playing style. Enjoyed all your clips...of course there were also mistakes but wow, those licks are totally cool. Oh, and so is your groove. You`ve got a great great groove in my opinion.
Sometimes you remind me of Mr. Weckl...sometimes of my drum teacher. But still you sound very unique.
Keep it up, especially this half-time shuffle. Till now I`m always puzzled when trying it.

Good work!

Like your kit and playing man!

Wich wood is your Black Panter in the last two videos? (Birch?)
I need a new snare and it's exactly the sound I search.

Thanks :)

Great groove Radeq! I love Black Panthers but the best part of your kit has to be the kick! Your bass drum sounds amazing!

thangz guys,
max77 you'll be surprised the panther is bronze, no wood it is funny, cause when I recorded these clips, the cadeson snare was much more quiet than the bronze one, but on the recordings, it sounds oppositly funny

Oh my god !
The sound projected by the bronze is really low pitched and I love it.
I need to buy a bronze snare because my Force 1005 snare is awful to ear.

I think I'll buy this : http://www.cymbalfusion.com/control/product/~category_id=SNARE-DRUMS/~product_id=BPPB455H

I liked the fill you put in this one (above) at the 0:31 mark. Here's my transcription, although I couldn't hear the final two beats on the BD (correct me if I'm wrong):

..1.....2.....3.....4.....1
HH..........L.R...L........
SD......RL..........RL.....
FT.........R...L.R.....RL..
BD........o..o..o..o..o..oo
CY........................R

Where did you learn how to create fills like this? Is there a book out there that exhausts this kind of stuff? The sticking is the standard RLBRLBRLB...and I can do that, as well as the final down on 1 on the B (aka 'BD' ). It's the crossover between HH and FT that's new to me. I think I saw that on the Tri Toms in highschool marching band. The two drums being crossed would be the two furthest away from each other (in order to give room for the arms to cross). This makes sense using the HH-FT crossover, since they are far apart.

The visual effect is stunning!

I went ahead and transcribed the next fill @ 0:35:

..1.......2.......3.......4.......1
HH.................................
SD.........LRLRL.LRLRL.LRLRL.LRLRL.
FT.................................
BD.................................
CY........R.....R.....R.....R.....R

It looks like the above is what you played, but it sounded on the verge of:

..1.......2.......3.......4.......1
HH.................................
SD.........LRLRL.LRLRL.LRL.LRLRLRL.
FT.................................
BD.................................
CY........R.....R.....R...R.......R

Steph
P.S. Use Courier New for the font and use '.' to keep the spacing.

:D hey, I never thoght that someone will transcribe my fills :D:D but you did it well, though the last one is right the first version. I dont know where from I do have these fills, they just suddelny got into my mind and then I play it, i cant explain why or where did i learned them..sorry :):) but im watching a lot colaiutas, weckls drumming, and also i have a bunch of videos from gospel drummers...that's i guess the key :)

Hi Radeq!

Yeah, I guessed at the HH-FT crossover because, frankly, I couldn’t see it no matter how many times I watched the video. I also tried playing it yesterday, and couldn’t get my left HH hand to reach the FT, at least not as easily and effortlessly as you did. Which brought up a point to me, that my drum setup may be wrong (and has been for the last 25 years!). Well I was right!! I reduced the kit to one TT and one FT, lowered my HH to about 5 inches above my (piccolo) snare, which itself was lowered as far as the stand would allow (I’m 5’6”). Not only did my SD-HH playing improve, but it was effortless. The cramp that I had put up with all these years in my left hand is no longer there! Which makes sense, because now there is less chance for my HH stick to hit my SD stick. If that makes any sense :)

(BTW, I play traditional grip.)

So yeah, there was a lot of info in that little video. You’re definitely on my list of drummers to watch!!

Also, I’m trying to start something new here on DW where people can document their licks (so that the rest of us can interpret and learn them). And the process so far is to use a text editor (Textpad, Notepad, Vslick, etc) to write the transcription, then cut-n-paste into the DW reply message (enclosed by the New Courier html block). Use the ‘.’s to keep the spacing. Remember that it won’t look right until you do a [preview] or [submit].

So the crossover was a great lick, both technically and visually. And the transcription shows just how easy and doable it is. And if it isn’t, then whala, you probably aren’t playing with the correct drum setup (eg. FT not close enough to BD limb, HH too high, etc).

Peace,

Steph
P.S. The two skills I see applied in your crossover lick, are (1) coordination between the hands and BD foot, and (2) applying the lick spatially, that is choose the surfaces you wish to apply the lick to.

PeartWeckler

On a (nother) side note...

It doesn't matter how well your chops are, or how well your coordination is, or how good your endurance is. If you don't have the right equipment and the right setup of that equipment in your "playing" space, then well you might not ever be able to do some of the things other drummers do that make your jaw drop.

If nothing, it at least helps explain why some drummers never progressed (like me) beyond a certain point in their playing (ie., it isn't necessarily because they don't have the chops).

Peace,

Steph

thanks buddy :) about the drum setup - Natural evolution, how to develope your technique - that video helped me a looot, dave explains there, how to set up correctly your drums, i did the same, thats why it looks so comfortably, and it is also, so your right, big secret is also in how much time you spend solving the "sight set up" thing ;)
