Here's two suggestions:

Zildjian:
14"K Hi-hat
21"-K ride
18" k crash
19" A custom crash

or

Sabian:
14" HHX Groove Hi- Hat
21" HHX Groove Ride
18" HHX Stage Crash
19" AA Medium Crash

and maybe a china?
- HHX china :beautiful and musical!

But all of this depens of how much cash you've got...

Bosphorus Traditional series
14" medium hats
16" medium crash
18" med-thin crash
20" medium ride (or heavy in my case)
Works great for rock, blues, funk.....
Apparently they sound sort of like warmer versions of the old 60s Zildjian A's. I can't verify this as I haven't heard 60s A's before, but they most certainly are very nice and versatile cymbals.
My favourite cymbal brand/cymbals I've heard yet (out of new A's, K's, AAXs, HHXs, etc).

what about preconfigured sets, like the ZILDJIAN ZBT 4 STANDARD SET? Are they okay or just too expensive? Dosn't have to be too fancy, i just need something that sounds ok to good, is not too good to practise on and is not an embarassment to use live :D

Or MEINL MCS `06? I don't know but they're in my pricerange so..

EDIT: or those: Istanbul Samatya Set, handhammered!

Big shocker here, I agree. Also check out the Bosphorus Turk, Versa and Stanton Moore Series.

SABIAN XS20. They are cheaper, more intermediate level cymbals but are made of b20 alloy unlike Zbts and whatnot. These will sound great, look nice and not cost too much. You can certainly add on later.

Zildjian says that theyre A Customs are most versatile. But when i go to my local drum shop i find that there are a lot of higher end cymbals that are very versatile but in a different delivery. If you get what I'm saying here.

If not then just go to your drum shop and play the cymbals they have there to figure out what works best. Try all brands and styles untill you find whats right.

I just got a set of MInel MCS and I have to say I am really pleased with them, I was going for Zildjian but the MCS sounded better to me and I got them for £120 with a Classics 14" medium crash thrown in!

The MInels are very good quality as well...and in this price range I think they are the better choice.

A versatile Paiste set-up that I've been using lately:
15" Giant Beats
18" Giant Beat
21" Dark Energy MkII Ride
(16" Signature Full Crash)

No it was a local music shop http://www.thelivemusicshop.com/welcome.htm they seem to sell for around £130 in the UK with the free crash thrown in I offered £120 and he said ok I think RRP is £240

definitely paiste giant beats.

from jazz to rock and everything in between.

(the 24" sounds especially great in a jazz setting)
