Well after wrestling with my inner "buy these suckers now!" demon I finally broke down and purchased a pair of the K 13" Light Hats today i've been store testing at my local L+M shop over the last few weeks. These are one smoking pair of 13" hats folks. Great crisp foot with a nice wash being nice and quick but still dark in character for a 13" pair of cymbals. They roar with a nice full on sizzle half open with lots of volume to spare if needed. Perfect second contrasting pair to my 14" K Custom Special Dry hats for certain types of gigs and recording situations. Now I have the best of both worlds in the high hat department covered nicely with the addition of these fine K Light high hat cymbals from Zildjian to my cymbal family. Can't wait to play them on a few outdoor gigs coming up where I know they will really deliver the goods.

Congrats on the new addition to the family lol didn't you just get the new ride too? I have been picking up a few of K's lately myself. I bough a used pair of 13" K Custom Darks, wow I'm glad I did, I think they sound much better than my 14" A Customs. I also got a new 22" K Custom High Definition Ride, 18" K Custom Dark Crash, 16" K Custom Dark Crash. I'm still shopping for a 14" K Custom Dark Crash and a 10"-11" splash. Man it's great to get new toys huh? Congrats again!!

Thanks Craig. Yes my K cymbal shopping as of late has been pretty active to say the least. Sounds like i'm not the only one. Could not hold back these latest beauties as hard as I tried since being such a smoking set of hats. The 13" K Custom Darks must be a fine pair too. The 14" K Custom Dark Crash is one fine cymbal to add to your collection too. Love mine. Good luck!.

Great taste of cymbals, Steamer!! I haven't tested myself those Special Dry hats, but from the sound samples I've heared they sound pretty close to my Sabian Protoype Fierce hats! And I'm also cought up into extensive shopping haha yesterday I bought a Sabian HH Duo Crash 16'' it was such a great deal ($170) I just couldn't resist! It's very similar to the Zildjian Dark line, a beautiful cymbal!

PS. Craig, those Dark hats are really cool, I don't think I can resist of buying them either lol

Steamer, have you tried the light hats in 14"? They're really great and I thing they go perfectly with the K Dark Medium Ride! By the way, the 24"K lght Ride is amazing also!

Thanks Raymond and congrats on your own recent finds. Yes the 14" Special Drys have there own unique character and make for a good contrasting pair of hats.

Yes willem36 I did test out the 14" model and they were very nice too. Something about this particular set of 13" K Light hats had me sold. They sound great with the 22" Dark Medium Ride by the way as i'm sure the 14" K Light model hats would too as you indicated.

If I were to fall into a pit of money, I'd definitely get a set of those K 13" light hats. They are among the best hats I've ever heard. I've always been a 13" hat fan, but I never heard anything quite like those K's.

Great purchase, IMO.

Yes ID Drummer I went over the budget I set for myself on new cymbal purchases but really got hooked on these nice 13" hats after testing them out over the last few weeks in the local shop. They cried out to me to take them away to a good home especially after being sold at a VERY good price by the local L+M shop.

Just a few observations regarding the profile and hammering of the two 13" cymbals. Both cymbals are different in both profile and hammering. The top cymbal has a much flatter profile than the bottom cymbal. Interesting differences in hammering too comparing both cymbals. The top hat has hammer marks right to the very edge causing almost small ripples on the outer edge of the cymbal. The bottom cymbal with a steeper profile and has no such hammer marks near the outer edge. The noted small hammer rippling of the the top hat outer edge could be one of the causes for such a defined but warm foot chip and all the nice sizzle when partly open struck with a stick. I'm not talking mastersound or sound edge ripples here just a subtle feature I noticed on close inspection of the top 13" Light hat cymbal.

Here's a pic of my new K 13" Light hats. Take note of the differences in hammering between the two cymbals as I mentioned in my previous post. The left top cymbal has the hammer marks right to the edge creating the subtle rippling in it's outer edge. Just used them in a couple of concerts last weekend. Outstanding 13" high hat cymbals.

Hmmm rippling to create an edge similar the Mastersounds I would guess. Helps air escape.

Were talking a very subtle feature here Craig. Nothing to obvious or dramatic just a very minor soft rippling at the outer edge of the top cymbal at certain spaces around the cymbal with random manner hammer marks. They really sound very crisp that's for sure so this subtle edge hammering certainly has an effect on the closing sound I agree.

quick question that is a little off topic:

have the k hats gotten thicker? I own a pair of 13" k/z dynos from before zildjian did their latest overhaul to the k line. i have been considering hunting down the bottom cymbal from the k set (if buying half a set is even possible...) so I can switch the sound very quickly. thing is that my top k cymbal does not feel like a medium, which is the weight zildjian currently lists that one at, so I am wondering if the k light hats are the same weight that the late 90s/early 00s k hats were. anybody remember back that far?

thanks

No these are a whole new animal compared to various older K's. These hats are indeed "light". The top cymbal is listed by Zildjian as med. thin but feels and plays more like a thin top hat to me with lots of sizzle and sparkle but still dark in character. The bottom is listed by Zildjian as a medium which appears correct to me based on it's dark sound and general weight. Outstanding 13" hats!.

I was just wondering if the how the light hats compared to the last generation of k hats in weight. Just from your picture I can tell these are a whole new animal.

This site list the current weights of a few samples of both the 13" and 14" K Light models including sound files :

Sorry no comparisons to the older models but you get a pretty good idea of how light they are.

In my current Zildjian catalog the standard K hats,Mastersound and K/Z combo in both 13" and 14" sizes are listed with having a medium top and medium heavy bottom for reference in comparison to the listed med.thin top and med. bottom on both size models of the light hats

I wish I had a mellow band so I could have an excuse to buy some Ks! They look great. I may get some K/Zs just to calm my K lust!

driver, if you are familiar with the band porcupine tree, their current drummer, gavin harrison, uses a pair of 13" k hi hats, and a large portion of their newer material is pretty heavy.

thanks. the light hats sound too thin for me.

Don't be fooled by the light weight of these hats. They have lots of cut and projection when needed. I did a outdoor concert with these hats last weekend and portions of the show were anything but "mellow" in a set of originals by the the leader in a jazz setting. Half open and hit hard they had enough sizzle to fry a steak and sound to be heard in the back part of this outdoor venue.

Well, I finally got around to playing and purchasing some of these today and they are absolutely beautiful! I'm blown away by the variety of rich sounds the cymbals are capable of producing and I anticipate that these will be "gettin' it done" in wide range of musical contexts. Ah, I'm in love!

They've got a similar sound to my Vintage & Cie Hats. Amazing sizzle half open, tight chick sound, fantastic splash and great to ride on. I think Zildjian are starting to get the picture and are creating some really great cymbals again. Instead of making thin cymbals that are actually quite heavy they are really making them thin now. About time too. These are great Steamer. Happy playing ;)

I just tried them at the store as I just purchased my hi-hats:

I got the K Custom Dark Hi-hats out of the K and the K Thin.

I play them three but the K Custom Dark just really came to me out of the three.
I'm gonna give it a band practice try tomorrow to see how it goes. If it doesn't work well, I might consider going back to the K :P

Congrats for your buy cause i'm certainly super happy about my purchase as well.

Rock on the Ks!

Surprised they haven't sold at that great price yet.

Had no problem selling mine the day they went up for sale but one guy was hot for them for his home recording studio so that made it an easy sale.

Good luck!.
