Hi all,

Another video from me, playing the classic Toto tune 99. This is I think one of Jeff's trademark grooves.

I hope you enjoy (despite one ill-timed fill... ;) )

Mmm I love this song. Good playing.. I don't have much to say other than that I think you could get the cowbell hit (and surrounding notes) a bit smoother. That's by far the toughest part of the groove loop, so I understand I'm nitpicking, but Jeff (like always) played it so smooth that it just fell right into the fold hardly unnoticed (I didn't realize it was him playing that cowbell note until I saw the video), whereas yours was a bit jerky and unsettled -- not a lot by any means, but I definitely felt it.

Overall though, great job. It's rare when I sit through an entire video that someone posts on here, but I did for yours, so let that say what it will!

Thanks for tuning in! The lighting effect is done in Win Movie Maker...

Thanks for watching and the kind comments. Yeah, I agree on the cowbell. I just put it up there and it's in the wrong spot (I usually have it mounted on the bassdrum) so I didn't hit the sweetspot all the time. Also, when Jeff plays it he usually leaves out the 16th note that follows the cowbell hit, which leaves a bit more breathing space. I hadn't played this song for so long so I just played it like I remembered it.

Ahh, Jeff was the best, it's a real challenge to play anything that he played with the ease that he played it with. That pocket of his was unbelievable. A great aim I think.

I'm no pro by any stretch, nor am I a teacher, etc, etc...however, I do not see / feel the above. Looked good and sounded good to me.

Nerg, great job .....and dammit, quit playing clips of that Pearl Reference kit of yours! ,....you're making me want to spend money I shouldn't be spending! :) Damn those sound great!!! WOW!

fussion, what I was saying was that I could tell it wasn't Jeff playing it. Now that's not necessarily a bad thing, but when you're playing a Jeff song the goal should be to get it Jeff smooth, which nergretty admitted when he said "a great aim I think." Basically, I'm just being very, very nitpicky since the guy can obviously handle that level of criticism.

And nergretty, it was obvious watching the vid that the cowbell placement was throwing you off a bit.. that was my first thought as to why you weren't absolutely completely perfectly supremely nailing that groove..!

Thanks for the nice comments. KzSgDrummer is talking about the micro-cosmos of drumming, which really is where it all happens IMO. I know I have the chops too pull off the Jeff groove but in the video it's just not exactly in the "right" Jeff pocket. The cowbell hit, that is.

I don't think there'll ever be a drummer like Jeff so one can't really sound exactly like him. It's that last bit that makes all the difference - the personality. Jeff was such a cool person, and it shows in his drumming. I'm not anywhere near as cool (but working on it ;) ).

Now, go buy one of them Reference kits!! LOL

Thanks man

Hey man, I love your playing. I saw you play the keys and the bass for your songs aswell, and that gave me an idea. I want to play along songs that are longer that one minute. I just got "Groove Essentials" by Tommy Igoe, and he has a lot of play along stuff, but every time I get into a groove the sample is finished. Now I was wondering if you have some music recorded that you could post so we could all play along. I don't know if you like the idea, but you would support a lot of drummers, and since you've got all the equipment and skills to pull it of you are THE CHOSEN ONE :).
Ow, if you don't like this idea, just post a great vid like this every week, that makes me happy too :)

Another awesome video Nergy!!!

I played the hell out of the I'll Be Over You video and studied it to get the parts right...Thanks to that video I've learned the song and can hit it note for note!!! Thanks again for that one!!! :D

I think you nailed 99 as well, and damn does your kit sound nice!!! You have the tom sound I've been trying to get forever...What kind of heads are you using on the batter and reso???

Again awesome video, keep them coming!!! Maybe you can keep the Jeff tribute going and do "Pamela", "Rosanna", or "Stop Loving You" next ;)

Brilliant, top class as usual. Did you play all the other instruments too? If so, that's even more amazing! You're not really doing anything wrong as far as I can see, Mr Porcaro would be proud. :)

Can you elaborate on your idea a bit. Covers or original music?

Thanks a lot for kind comments. Yup, the instruments are all me.

Yeah I hope Jeff would approve that we're trying to keep his legacy fresh in minds. He would be a bit embarrased though. He was such a humble guy.

Thanks
