Okay, I've done a ton of searching, have found some answers, but not enough. I'm looking to replace my Paiste 22" 505 heavy ride. I know alot of people think this is an intermediate level ride, but I've used it the last 20 years with success, in the studio and live. I want a more modern ride now. I use to play progressive rock, but now it's rock / blues / funk / classic rock / and occasional jazz style dinner sets. As you can see, I need a versatile ride to cover all areas. I rarely crash my ride, so it doesn't need to be crashable. I like it to have a good definition and ping, but I don't want a man hole cover. I have tried out some rides, I concentrated on Zildjians, but am not totally committed. I did like the 20" Zildjian K custom, but they didn't have a 22" there to try. I do 80% unmiced gigs, so it needs to have some volume and projection when needed. I do want it to be a 22" ride though, but 21" could work. Please try to suggest specific models and I will try them out ASAP. I am leaning towards the 22" K Custom unless I get some better ideas.

Have you tried Sabiany yet? They've got great rides. Personally, I like the new AA Raw Bell Dry and or the AA Metal-X. Try those or maybe, try some HH or HHX, great cymbals. Good Luck.

I have a Bosphorus Traditional series 20" Heavy ride and it seems to be just what you are after. I play practically the same music as you and it's great. I've heard that it sounds like an old 60s A zildjian. I don't know about that, but I love it. My favourite ride I've played yet to date (that includes K, A, HHX, HH, AA, Sigs, etc.).

Massaf,
I'm definitely open to Sabians. I know I really like those raw bells. I listened to some mp3's on their site, but I need to play them in person. What would the difference be between the AA and the HH? Do you know which would fit my description best?
OzzyBiz,
Where do I go about trying Bosphorous cymbals out?

The best thing is find a shop that is a Bos dealer, but failing that, check out cymbalsonly.com for sound samples of the actual cymbal. They have most of the range (but not my ride, I think it was a gold series that managed to find it's way onto the traditional range possibly, as it's heavier than all other 20" trads I've seen.)

Could try just a plain 2002 ride. Either 20 or 22. Thats a very balenced cymbal in those sizes

If you want to stick with Paiste I can personally recommend the 20" sig. dry ride. I've used mine in situations ranging from metal to pop, to jazz and it sounds just as great in each genre.

It has a great tone, a good strong body with controllable overtones. In louder situations it still cuts through, and it melts into the music in softer ones. If you get a chance check it out for yourself.

That is what I was going to say. I have both...20 is a power ride and the 22 is a med weight. These are GREAT live and Paistes sound great with a light or heavy touch.

I suggest a 21" or 22" Paiste Signature Full Ride. Perfect for whatever, except maybe metal.

To answer your question, I would say that AA (and AAX) are brighter and more rock-wise than HH (and HHX). This 4 lines are top quality, so im sure any will give you the sound your looking for. Test and hear them and make your own choice!

my 2nd hand paiste signature 20" full ride is pretty versatile, but a bit of a manhole cover :p its no problem to me but check out the series on their webby and see if you like anything.

So is yours a gold series? From what I understand from the website, the gold series is just a brilliant traditional, right? Is yours brilliant. I did like the sound clips, but I need to play one in person.

The 22 K custom ride is a nice choice. Other nice options are the 22 K High Definition Ride-a bit drier than K Custom
22" A Custom (the regular one)
Sabian HH Raw Bell Dry Ride
Sabian HHX Groove Ride
Paiste Signature Dark rides (there's a few kinds of these)
Bosphorus Stanton Moore Wide Ride 22

Zildjian A 21" sweet ride is a great "all around" ride. I've used it for a while now playing the same type of music. The A Custom Ping ride mentioned below sounded like a trash can lid to me.

No, it's a traditional finish. The Gold series tend to be heavier traditional models in a brilliant finish. Mine resembles a 20" Gold ride in weight.

So how would the 22" differ? Just a lower note?

21" HH raw bell dry ride....

Rides extremely well, bell is defined beyond "defined", and the wash shimmers...greatly.

Go play one.

Cindy Blackman's new Zildjian ride sounds fantastic and would easily work in all those situations (I heard it at her clinic). It's the K Dark Medium Ride, 22". You should check it out.

I've got a 21" Sweet Ride and while I love it for my jazz work, it's not the ultimate ride. The K Custom Mediums are a great choice at versatility as well I might add. My vote goes with the Bosphorus Traditional Medium-Light Ride which resembles the old "medium rides" of the 1960s which were used in everything from big band jazz, to rock & roll. They crash, they ride, and they have a bell what more could you want? Rivets perhaps...

Being mostly a Zildjian man, I would suggest finding a Sabian Larrie London 21" sig ride. Larrie created it with Sabian years ago as a versatile ride to cover all of the sessions he used to do. I don't know, but Sabian may have released it under a different name after the Sigs were gone as it was supposed to be a limited Edition. I will say it IS versatile and able to cover many styles.

Good luck! Every drummer has their Holy Grail!

Well, I ended up picking up a late 80's Zildjian 22" K Custom ride off ebay for $125. I figured with that killer price I just might pick up another ride with a completely different sound. The cymbal is in very good shape and I'm crossing my fingers that I'm happy with it, as there is a slight gamble with ebay and not being able to play it. I really liked this cymbal in the stores, and hopefully this late 80's model is generally the same. I personally like the older Zildjians anyways. Wish me luck.

BTW, thanks for all the ride recommendations. My eyes have been opened to alot of different cymbal makers out there.

So I finally got my 22" K Custom in the mail today (ebay), and I'm very satisfied. This ride is just what I was looking for. It's got a nice ping, great spread, and is alot different than the 22" Paiste heavy ride I'd been using. I won't even need to sell the Paiste because I got such a good deal on the Zildjian ($125). It cleaned up real nice.

I'm a Zildjian man...so I'd have to say the three rides I own are pretty versatile for me:

20" K Custom
20" A Custom Projection
20" A Custom Ping (I just got this...have yet to fully try it out).

Best of luck.

Thanks for pointing that out. I was just giving an update. This is a late 80's K Custom ride. Would this be considered an EAK Zildjian?

So Todd (fooleze) set me straight on this cymbal. It's a late 80's Zildjian K "Custom Ride". In other words it's not a K Custom, but a regular K line that's named "Custom". All I know is that I really like it and the bell is killer.

You might wanna try the Paiste Signature Reflector power ride. I am very happy with my 20" sound formula reflector power ride, the signature reflector 22" power ride is what comes closest to it in sound. It can be very subtle, but also very loud.

even though he found the ride, I figure continuing the topic is nice for other readers.

my ride: 20" a custom projection ride
this ride is very sensitive to the shape of the stick tip. i use to play with vf X5As with an acorn tip, and the sound was so subtle and fairly dark. I now use vater super jazz with an oval tip, which brings out a bit more ping and some of the brighter overtones.

my dad's ride: 20" k heavy (late 90s/early 00s)
very colorful ride. dark sound with a lot of ping.

both are extremely versitle.
