EC1 is the same head as powerstroke 3, only thicker.
Wonder why noone uses powerstrokes on toms but everyone is fanatical about EC.

Is it the same head, apart from the thickness? I mean, does the Powerstroke3 have the same built in muffling ring as the EC? And is the EC1 just a single ply version of the EC2? I'm also quite keen to hear from anyone who has tried the EC1.

I picked up a set of clear EC1s yesterday. My EC2s are pretty much used up after 9 months of use. I mounted the 10 & 12 yesterday and hope to mount the 14 & 16 tomorrow.

I'll post back once I get them mounted and tuned.

Fred,
Are these going on your DW's or your Luddies? Can't wait to hear about them.

These are going on the DWs. As soon as I figure out all of the recording stuff I'll start posting some sound clips. I should have the heads mounted tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

Take care.

If you want a lower fat sound,....try the EC2 coated, with a G2 clear on the bottom! YES!
Sounds wierd, but it works. Saw it hear from someone, then re-confirmed by speaking w/ Evans customer service! Makes my 14x16 really growl, and I don't get that "bowing" sound anymore! Very nice...try it!

P.S. My guy at Guitar Center tried the EC1's on a Tama Starclassic Bubinga kit that they got in...he said it was horrible ....took FOREVER to tune, ...but, ....I have NO personal experience w/ them.......

I tried a coated EC1 on my 10". I'd say that the sound is warmer because of the coating, and compared to an EC2, the sound is just slightly more open.

The EC1 is the same thickness as the EC2 but it's 1 ply instead of 2 thin plies. Same metallic muffle ring running around the edge of the head.

Powerstroke 3 = 10mil 1 ply
Evans EC1 = 14mil 1 ply
Evans EC2 = 14mil 2 ply

Up and running.

These heads did seem a bit more fussy that the EC2s. It took about two hours to get them sounding good. I won't say perfect, but in the general area. They are a little more open then the two ply version.

I'm a drum dial guy and my default setting is 75 over 75. The EC2s were set at 80 over 80 for the rack toms and 75 over 80 for the floors.

I tried a number of settings and went with 75 over 80 for the racks and 70 over 75 for the floors. That seemed to work out well as a starting point. I'll be fine tuning today as I play.

We'll see how it goes.

I know that on my 10" I had to tweak it quite a bit to not sound "tubby".

I messed around with my recording gear all day to the point that I'm both blind from reading the manual and deaf from listening to the play back.

I'm off again tomorrow so I'll be tweaking them some more. I think I need to lower the pitch a little. I was messing around with the EQ and reverb on the machine and they sounded pretty good.

My little 4 X 14 OCDP snare sounded killer.

The Emad 2 didn't come across that great. It sounded a little slappy. I have a couple other kick heads around here some place so I'm gonna try something different tomorrow.

I learned a lot today. This recording stuff is going to be a great tool.

Day two with the new heads. I lowered the pitch and got a dull slappy sound, so I raised them up to about where the EC2s were and they sounded pretty good. I tweaked them by ear so the intervals between the drums was about the same. Had a little snare buzz off the 10" tom so I messed with that some.

If you like EC2s you'll probably like these. They seem a little more open, but I think you're really splitting hairs. To my ears (which aren't that great) the EC2 and EC1 sound about the same.

That's not as bad thing. They are good heads, but if you're running EC2s now I wouldn't run out and buy a set of the EC1s. Again, the differences are slight.

In the end, I needed new heads anyway.
