Hi,
Does anyone know anything about zildjian scimitar hihats...are they at all good? I've never heard of them, but I just found someone selling a pair for 30 bucks. I like zildjian, but I'm also suspicious of 30 dollar cymbals, any input would be appreciated.

Never heard of em. Make sure you hear how they sound, and look for damages before buying them. 30 sounds suspicious.

They're crap. You'd be better off spending the $30 on two nice, high-quality pie pans.

ha, well we have got a Scimitar crash in music school and it sounds thin, trashy and for a crash not that bad in my ears.
I could imagine that the hats sound so trashy and thin, too.
Do you have the chance to try/listen to them?? If you like them, take them but I`d personally spent more money for some high-quality hats.

I would want to hear them before I bought them. If you were so inclined to have/use effects cymbals, they probably have a bite to them that's gonna fall between a splash and a china. That's if you were gonna seperate them and use them as cymbals rather that a hat. If you're not that kind of esoteric player, pass on 'em

Scimitar was Zildjians intro line when I first started playing. I'm not sure if they still sell them. The cymbals don't sound good and are pretty dead and trashy but they definitely aren't the worst I've ever heard. They are perfect for a "practice" set of hats.

There were 2 series of Scimitar cymbals, the first ones that came out were gold and very thick. The hats were truly awful and the crash (although durable) was much the same. The ride was usable in a rock-ish setting. The gold scimitars were soon replaced by the bronze ones that were thinner (and trashy as Karl said) and seemed to sustain forever. While the bronze was an improvement on the gold series in the hi-hat and crash department, they were still Z's entry level cymbals... if you're looking at them to be your main pair of hi-hats for the next few years, save for something better - you'll be disappointed with these, but if they're just for a practice kit or something extra to bash on, then $30 is about right.

DO NOT BUY THESE! These cymbals suck! My school has them. These cymbals were made in the 80's and discontinued in the early 90's. My school has a 18in. crash/ride and it sonds like a gong......HORRIBLE WASH! To go from a zildjain custom A to this crap is just awful!

They are total junk. Spend your $30 on dinner and a movie. I wouldn't pay 30 cents for those things!

With cymbals, its best to use your ears. Zildjian has long prided itself on its theory that "no two cymbals sound exactly the same". And in my experience, that's true. What matters most is that they sound good to you, fit your budget, and are durable. I own several old school entry-level Zildjian's that sound really, really good. (But I have also owned some that sound terrible.)

Zildjian Scimitar's were Zildjian's budget/entry level cymbals I had 14" hats, 16" crash, 18" crash and 20" ride in the mid to late 90's. At the time I thought there were ok but always wondered why they never recorded well. Like anything, you generally get what you pay for, if only I spent my money more wisely then I wouldn't have had to by a full set of vintage avedis several years later. Saving money now may mean spending more money later.

I've owned the scimitar bronze hihats, and the scimitar bronze ROCK hihats. The rock ones are pretty nice, the bronze ones I had as a kid and were pretty manky, so the regular scimitar ones (the cheapest of cheap) will probably be pretty harsh but, 30 dollars seems very cheap, go for it LOL

These were replaced in the 90's by the ZBT Plus line.
Even though they were entry level, I think they sounded better than the ZBT's or ZBT Plus...

I have a pair of zildjian scimitar hi hats and i think they sound great.
I have a pair of Scimitar hats. They came with my first kit (Ludwig Rocker II!) way back in '86, still have them. I have no idea what alloy they're made from; mine have a greenish hue to them. While they sounded pretty bad to me back then, I dug them out recently, and now they sound kind of neat to me. To my ear, they have sort of a cheap electronic hi-hat sound; I find myself busting out some drum-n-bass grooves. Certainly not the best general use hats, but they can be fun to mess around with.

I agree. I have a pair of those hats. They are not bad at all. I find them quite thick so they are fine in louder music. I used them for practise.
