I bought a keller shell 14x5.5 of ebay for $49. It came with the bearing edges and snare beds done.
I took the hardware off my champagne gold ludwig snare 14x5 (which i could never get to sound the way I wanted).
It was a fun project. Measuring for the lugs was kinda of a bitch but ohh well.
Sound clips added below pics.

I forgot to mention its a 10 ply. I wanted a 6 or 8 ply but couldn't find one at such a good price with the bearing edges and snare beds included.
I should have clips up tomorrow, hopefully. But definitely by sunday.

Definitally cool. Personally i would added a bit more color or a racing stripe. But hey, whatever floats your boat.
I guess its good you didnt have to pay for lugs, but i would have gone gold if it was my choice.

I also agree that a racing stripe would look cool, a chrome pinstripe to match the hardware ;) But like maddrummr said: whatever floats your boat, finishing is nothing more than a matter of taste. Great work! Does the sound work out better for you than the ludwig?

Well here's the sound sample...
recorded with an sm57 about 2 inches above the rim around 30-40 degree angle aimed sort of centered.

wof. The look is simple and it isn`t the most beautiful snare I`ve ever seen BUT who cares?
This baby sounds just awesome!! I`m really proud of you man. Great job on that snare drum. How is it tuned?
Sounds tight, and kinda fat. Really professional!

Thanks Karl.
For tuning, I keep the bottom head very tight and the snares relatively loose but not so loose its trashy sounding but loose enough were the snares aren't choking the snare, if that makes sense. Let the drum breath. The top head is probably medium/tight..I guess. I may try a different batter head at some point. Ambassador seems a little ringy on this drum..its a nice ring though
I think if I placed the mic a little closer and pointed it half way between the rim and center, I would get more pop but I figured having the mic not as close as I would put it for close micing the snare it would provide a more natural sound for listeners here.
To address the people who wished I added strips or made the paint job a little more "flashy", this was the first time i've done a project like this. I figured the KISS system was the best route. (Keep It Simple Stupid). Also the chances of me getting sick of the basic black paint job are slim to none.
