17" long 5A ????

I'm not aware of any major manufacturers that make that size - but they should. I have some custom sticks in that size from www.drumvillage.com and one of the company owners, boomboomda, posts here a lot.

I have always wanted a stick with the reach of a big stick but the maneuverability of a short stick and these customs sticks provide that very well.

Here are some that come close

Regal Tip:
Chester Thompson - 17" L .550" Dia

Alex Van Halen - 17 3/4" .570 Dia (a little longer that 17"a)

Vic Firth:
X5A - 16 1/2" L .580" Dia (I like this stick)

Vater:
1A - 17" L .590" Dia

Thanks...started going through each manufacturer online and I bogged myself down with too much info. I'm waiting to find some time to go to the local GC and field test. I'll print this out and see if I can try tap them out on a showcase set or two. The Alex V.Halen sounds tempting...17.75" is a looong darn stick.

If the Alex Van Halen is too long, Regal Tip makes a 3B, it's the same stick just an inch shorter. .575 x 16 3/4
The John "JR" Robinson is the same size as the 3B but has a smaller tip incase you don't like the big one on the 3B or AVH.

Two sticks I can think of right away are the Buddy Rich Signature Vic Firth as its a bit heavier than a 5A but over 16" long. The Vater Super Jazz is 16 1/4 " long and I plan on getting some of those. The Vic Firth Stanton Moore is also a 16.25" inch stick and a bit thinner than the 5A.

I tend to play 16" and shorter sticks closer to the butt and I just don't feel comfy. I used to play Tommy Aldridge sigs (Japanese Oak with a ton of laquer)...easily the HOSS of weighty sticks. I destroyed way too many things using those. So, now I'm looking for something to give some more room to confortably get my hands back into that natural balanced fulcrum position. I haven't made it to any stores as of yet...I have a show tomorrow night at the Norva in Virginia Beach, and an album release shindig next thursday...so I'm going to have to get somewhere before thursday.

Thanks for all the advice. It'll accompany me to wherever I end up.

A few Pro-Mark models come to mind. The 747 (rock), 718 (Acid Jazz), and 5A Stinger models all feature the exact same diameter of a 5A, but with a little extra length (though none of those at 17" long).

A couple weeks ago, I tried a set of Alex Van Halen sigs. I like the zero-laquer...but I soon realized that they just hit w-a-y too hard for what I'm playing. If I kept running with those...as much as I like em', I'd be destorying my cymbals and heads quickly. I'm going to back it down to 16" - 16.5". 17" is just too long. Much the same with the Morgan Rose (Sevendust) signatures. I don't have the funds to keep with the sheer destruction they can cause...lol.

So for right now, I'm staying with a 5A from Vic Firth that I found to be middle of the road. Good solid hickory stick, wood tip, and comes as "tonally matched" pairs. Just a bit cheaper too.

Its a 5a in grip with a 17" length.

If you're going to stay with the VF 5A, give the extreme 5A (X5A - model number) a try. It give a little extra reach.

Actually its quite a fair bit thicker than 5A... its a good 0.020 difference... But its quite a comfortable stick. Amazingly light for its length. I tried some of those but I don't like the big tip...

Me neither... Unless I really need more reach. But my arms are quite long so yeah don't quite need such long sticks. I prefer shorter sticks so I can be faster and more agile. I used to accidently hit the wrong cymbal back when I was using vic firth rock (0.630" by 16.5+") sticks.
