I posted the purchase of this kit a little after Christams 2006..
My first kit..wanted one since I was 5 yrs. old..well now at 36..I bought it ;)
Tama Swingstar-it does the job...and well for me.
I had ordered two toms..and they just came in today..
6 month wait was not a joke when the sales guy told me of the delay...
I added the 12 and 14 inch toms..
and I changed ALL the skins to Aquarian....two were broken..
So...is this kit half decent??
What's missing ;)

Nice kit, the layout the toms look slightly too angular for my liking but that's just me. I think everyone will just say get overall better cymbals. I love the roto-toms, I have a pair which I don't use because I don't have a stand, but they're wicked.
Tom
cool kit but id upgrade the Sabian Solar cymbals and heads straight away. Unless you like them of course, but i know from experience that Solars and stock heads are pretty horrid sounding. Apart from that i like it. Looks like a real fun kit to play.

I like the color...is it green or does it just look that way? My only personal preference would be to take your second to last tom (14 I'd guess?) and put it down for a 2 floor tom setup. Then you can move your ride alittle closer. I'd also try and work on setting up ergonomically. Right now it looks like you might have to reach for alot of things more than you really should have to. Take a look at Neil Pearts kit to get an idea of how to position a kit of this size.

The colour is Vintage silver..I have no idea why it looks green..When I opened the box fo toms at he store...The colour kinda of threw me off.."wow///so thats my true colour ..." was my reaction.
because I am so used to see it as green (must be the lighting onbiously)..I forgot it's a dark siver..
I'm keepoing the last tom up cause Im getting the 18" floor tom eventually..so that's why I kept it there..
And yes..I know the cymbals need an upgrade..
I have only 1 sabian Xs..and and it sounds like a true instrument cmpared to the other bB8's....unreal..
but i the end ..it's fun to play...ataully I haven't even played on it yet...I finihsed setting up at 04h30 ..
Yes the heads are Aquarian coated super 2 's.
Thx for the replies and iadeas.

Eh some things i would change:
Hi hat stand looks like you twisted your ankle
maybe try 3up2down
Cymbal placements are a little odd
Though dont listen to me its not like i'm sitting right in front of your kit.
Love the cowbell and the roto toms.

Cool kit. What's missing. A band, a stage and about 10,000 screamin' fans. Total arena rock. Mile high cymbals and tons of drums. Go for it.

Hey man, you stole my kit ! Moreover, we are about the same age...
I'm glad you're an Aquarian fanatic, (Yes I know Aquarian sound good on Swings too) I like your setup but you can always fit your 14x11 just before your 16x16 (look at my kit in my sig.). Both mix, match and sound very good together.
BTW, I'm treating the inside of my toms shell with 2 coat of tung oil and Man, you could not imagine how much difference it makes. My kit screams now instead of speaking.
Vintage silver wrap has the particularity to change color depending of light reflection.
Where are you from, I se a Steve's music store bag in the room corner ?

Salut ! Moi je suis dans l'nord en Abitibi.
What exactly tung oil.
I heard about this treatment about a year ago when browsing ghostnote and drumshed forums. Tung oil help keeping and protecting wood.
wikipedia
Tung oil is made from the pressed seed from the nut of the tung tree. Tung oil is considered a drying oil much as linseed, safflower, poppy and soybean oil. When applied it provides a tough, highly water-resistant finish which does not darken noticeably with age as does linseed oil.
Drum manufacturer were doing this treatment in the 60s up to the 70s but stopped this for economy reason. Still some custom drum builder can offer you the service.
I used the "walmart" minwax version whish isn't pure tung oil but is somewhat OK. I coated with a 100% cotton clothe two layers of oil inside the shell and bearing edge which I letted dry and waited 24 hrs between both. I also gently sand ( 1000 to 2000 grit ) the bearing edge between each coat and let everything dry for at least 72 hrs before putting all hardware to the shell and fitting heads. The minwax tung oil seal the porous pores of the phil. mahogany wood and leave the shell interior less rougher so it increase the shell resonance. You can also wax the bearing edge before heading but I didn't do it. What I did though on my Swingstar which is exactly like yours (size & color), I replaced all metal washer for nylon's one. Hey got them (bag of 100) for 10$. Both these small upgrades make my kit sounding like it never sounded before.
There's my 16" and bass drum left which are going in treatment very soon. Let me tell you my kit is now fitted with 10" up and 13" & 16" down and I'm in love with this small config. and the sound I getting from my snare and 10" and 13" toms.
Here's a pic of my stock snare treatment and if you click on my sig you'll see in my last pics the 10" and 13" treated shell.
