im always asking for help here...!!hopefully my tirade of snare questions that i spued forth over the last few months have faded from everyones memeories! ;D

ive been making money lately...woohoo!And ive, in the last year, purchased my second hand Sonor force 2005, skinned the baby up and shes sounding like a dream, ive bought my Stagg double bass pedal...gettin into that....and then my true child, my 12" black panther cherrywood snare.....

so my kit is sounding quite nice....im sehr pleased...

but, as has been my dream since i was a child, i want to start to purchase a hell of a lot of cymbals....

i want to replace my old 'Anvil' hi-hats first, then i want a new crash that can hopefully compliment my Paiste 16" 802. and maybe a brand new ride...

im into funk,jazz,prog...really kind of odd stuff...my kits compact....i wouldnt be a 35 tom kind of guy.....but i like my sound fast. Im looking for cymbals that are dark, maybe fast decay and basically odd....this will not be a straight forward thing, as im basically just planning here for when i begin to make more money...

im looking especially at stuff like the fusion hats, groove hats, (i want light hats), and the pasite sounworks. Also Meinl and Istanbuls(which i quite like...but not sure of).....havent had a good look at any Zildjians...if i would id be interested in the K customs or something i reckon....also what are the custom companies: ie: Saluda etc. like?

but especially interested in the Meinls and peoples experiences with them...possibly the Byzances....

as i said this is an ongoing project....i know im only playing 2 and a half years, but i would like to put my money somewhere i could use it well....other than my actual job(photography!)haha!

Thanks,
Sean.,

I can't help you with the meinl, I would like advice on those myself, but I think you should try out some K custom dark fast crashes, also the k dark crashes. They sound very nice.

You could also stick with paiste and get RUDE cymbals, they are pretty dark.

Check out the Sabian HH (Hand Hammered) Series. I just purchased a 12" HH Sound control crash that is wicked. Its very quiet (dont ask me how). but has a fast quick attack and fades very fast. Thats what I actually bought it for was to be used as a fast crash and it works wonders. They also have a 14, 15, and 16" model.

RUDEs are pretty bright actually...

yeah no im not interested in the RUDES....they seem like damn high quality cymbals....but much too loud, piercing and just generally distracting for what i want them for....

basically i want crashes that are as quick as splashs!!haha!(i suppose i could just get lots of splashes...haha!)and that can kind of fade into what im doing on the kit!haha!strange explanation maybe....

also hi-hats?

If your after crashes that react like splashes then definately check out the HH sound control series. These are thin cymbals though. They will break if most of the drummers on this forum were to get hold of them but they sound amazing. Especially good for recording situations where the cymbals wont take over everything.

Hey man, you should definitly check out some Meinls, they are wonderful!
The last time I was purchasing cymbals, I was after the same sound as you, some dark and quick stuff who could be used in jazz, prog and you name it.

So I got this, all Meinl Byzance: 14" Medium hats (regular), 21" Dark ride, 18" Medium-Thin crash (brilliant) and a 10" splash (brilliant). Now, I got to say the hats and ride is just perfect. The hats have great stick definition, but still with some dark washy overtones wich I love, they work great playing half-open too and they have a strong "chick" when closed with the foot. The perfect allround-hats.
The ride is also great, the allround sound is dark with quick decay, but you still get a nice ping sound (not a bright one) on the body, and the bell is great. What I like best about it tho, is the dynamics. The ride responds just as you hit it, from the lightest swing pattern to the roar when you crash it, wich actually works great, because it doesnt have that gongy sound wich many rides have when crashed. So overall, also a great cymbal.
Now, the 18" Medium-Thin crash is also great, but I did not hear it in person before I got it, so I was not aware of how powerful it would be. So as a crash it works great in rock, prog and stuff like that, and I use it as a ride when playing jazz, works great for that, but a bit to bright for me. Thats why I'm getting a new crash from the Jazz line they just introduced, it should be great, heard nothing but good things about them and the soundclips are wonderful.
The splash is cool, pretty bright but still has some body and cut through. I'll maybe add a 8" dark splash too, for a bit faster, darker sound.

So, Meinl is great and I can't praise them enough, Byzance is what to go for, the dark ride and medium hats are lovely, but you should check out the Jazz line too, I have not heard them in person, but they should work great, but will not be as versatile perhaps for other stuff than jazz.

Since you won't have the time to go to any stores and listen for yourself, check out all the soundclips you can on www.meinl.de and www.cymbalsonly.com, they are very accurate. I could try to get some soundclips up myself.
And good luck!

Oh, and if you go to the Meinl site and the NAMM 07 videos of Thomas Lang, Johnny Rabb and Wolfgang Haffner (he helped design it) you can see them testing out the Jazz line,

AAXplosion crashes from sabian are very very fast crashes... Maybe a little too loud for what you're interested... Look for a 14" Splash if you want a splash sound from a more crash-y cymbal.

New cymbals eh?? lol, I always end up saying this, but the sabian xs20 line rocks for the price, and wuhan and dream bliss stuff rocks for the cheap price also. Look around, you'll find what you want. Ebay has some good deal, and your music store has to have some to.

Grab your sticks and take em' down to the store and try some cymbals :D

If you are locking for very dark sound then I recommend K custom dark line..
they price may by high but they sound amazing for jazz and other style of music..
I love this cymbals.

I own a K custom medium ride 20" and i love this cymbals..
I like this cymbals for jazz but you may not like this for jazz but it sound also very well inn rock

About the Akira Jimbo K custom hybrid line, I think the sound amazing but I'm think it is also a little bit funky cymbals.

The K Dark Thin Crash is also great if you are locking for very musicals cymbals

The Bosphorus are cheep hand hammered cymbals.
The are great for jazz and other style of music.

The sabian HHX Groove Hats is great for funk, love the funk/r&b groove sound.
Sabian have also hand hammered cymbals and I recommend them for jazz and the hh and hhx for your style of music.

I'm not a big Paste man but try the Dark Energy line, the are really expensive cymbals but sound so amazing

I hope this will help you to get a new cymbals but rember try as many cymbals as you can like Zildjian, Sabian, Paste, meinl and Bosphorus..

PS. Remember The k and k custom line form zildjan, sabian hh, hhx and hand hammered, Paste Dark Energy and the Bosphorus cymbals is the way I tink you want to go with.

Yeah,

i was thinking smaller sizes (15 to 17") for quick decay, myself!

i really like the byzance line from meinl. i haven't heard them in person, but from sound clips off their site, and benny greb's videos on here... they sound fantastic.

price wise, here in the states they're a lot cheaper than paiste, zildjian, and sabian (i don't know about ireland though).

Dont just get splashes because they arent going to project well enough on a stage. What sounds great on its own or in your bedroom will sound a lot 'weaker' onstage, and will need some extra volume and resonance to help make its presence felt.

Definitely check out the Byzance line, which will be to your liking, otherwise HH Sounds Control or HHX Legacy series from Sabian will give you what you want.

The Meinl's are like this (cheapest --> more expencive), everything after Classics are "professional" quality.

HCS
MCS
Classic
Generation X
Amun
MB10
Soundcaster Custom
Byzance
MB20

The Byzances is your bet tho, it's the darker more traditional sound. And it's handhammered in Turkey.
