Ich bin wieder einmal beeindruckt!! ;-)

Amazing. btw, have you re-tuned your toms? They sound so brilliant now!
Overall I don`t have much to say because I find it just so well played...the only thing I still don`t know really is: What are your influences?

Stanton Moore...and? Mhhh

Nie mam pojecia co powiedziales, ale dzieki ;)

thanks Karl! i must say i'm pretty proud of my toms right now :). though i didn't do much since last recording, you know? it's because i set up my drums properly, and now i can hit the sweet spot easier :D. generally i tune the reso head very high to get the ring, and tune the batters so the drums just sound nicely together ("like a family" as Stanton once said ;)).

influences? "The M's" as i call them: Morello, Moore, Modeliste, Martin (my last name's Matuszewski, so probably it's not a coincidence;)). Herlin Riley for some time. Oh, and Bonham :P.

Aside from the occasional clipping, I thought the recordings were of great quality. It really fits the genre well. Very organic sound. I love it. It sounds so familiar... hmmm I wonder why.. hahah. These are the types of beats that really make me move. I have been trying so hard to pick up WWOZ at the new job site but it is pretty hard. I did pick up a couple new jazz albums last weekend (Dirty Dozen and Wynton Marsalis (new fav) though to help me get by.

If you listen to WWOZ on Saturday mornings (CST) you will hear lots of the latin and afro-cuban stuff. It's very fun to play along to.

thanks man! great to hear that "the locals" from Louisiana like what i'm playing :). you mentioned Dirty Dozen, yeah, they're great! i love their last album "what's going on" or sumthin like that, and i love the way they incorporate the traditional brass band second line stuff with some newer ideas. and Marsalis did a fantastic soundtrack to "Unforgivable Blackness", with the great Herlin Riley on drums, though i'm not sure if it's Wynton or one of the others... :).

by the way thanks for the tip about WWOZ, i will surely check it out!

Nice work! I'm not up on New Orleans style drumming (don't hit me, Sleepy!), but I sure like what you are doing there. The drums sound really nice and compliment your drumming well.

The Dirty Dozen album I bought is 'What's Going On'. It's pretty good. There are a few tracks I really like. The others I think will take a little while to sink in. I bought Wynton's newest album called 'From The Plantation To The Penitentiary'. I love every track on it. That album has really got my head thinking about music in a different way.

I have seen the whole (or most I think) of the Marsalis family play live years ago, however recently I've only bought Wynton's album. I did hear one of Ellis' songs on the radio a couple weeks ago. I believe he is the dad of all the others. I definitely need to get some of his stuff. It's like a combination of funk and jazz. Wynton's stuff is progressive jazz I guess... not fusion... but the album I have is very interesting. Very laid back for the most part and there are some great grooves with parts where the harmonies just kind of stretch their boundaries a little. You almost think there is a wrong note played but he holds everything together so well.

IDD, no worries. Hah! If you like the stuff that kacperivo is playing you should really check out the WWOZ link in my sig. Honestly man, he does a great job of playing the New Orleans style. It's really great to me to see so many drummers world wide getting into this style of music. I know jazz kind of brewed up in a few different places in the US but I really love the New Orleans flavor.

Yes, seriously....let`s praise him for that! What an awesome station! I like the roots part...so inspiring to listen to the roots of something.

PS: and kacperivo (don`t know your real name)....why don`t you record something with your friend on the hammond and someone on the bass (jamming or somethin) and send it to such a radio station and ask for some air time?

Worth a try...

hehe thanks Karl, but the problem is that now we're about 600 kilometers away, and despite the internet, it would be hard to record a tune together. i'll try to look for someone here in Krakow, but it'll take time. maybe you're right, maybe it's worth a try, i usually try to take on such occasions, even if there's no chance to succeed :).

and my real name is actually Kacper :). the second is Iwo, so there you go - kacperivo ;)

I'm digging it, especially the NOLA latin. I was just practicing that baio (?) ostinato earlier. Still haven't quite got the hang of improvising over it yet. Yours sounded great!

Mhhh, that is right. Take time for that, I also take much time for new recordings...one of them I`m going to send to a station in California so it takes much time to record a version without those very small but annoying mistakes we do when drumming...argh. :-P

PS: Kacper...ah yeah, so is it like in Germany 'Kasper'?

Ivo that was awesome.

You've got the sickest ability to throw in short, tasteful embellsihments into fat, chunky grooves which are imaginative and musical.

You had my head nodding the whole way.

On a side note, do you think you can show me to play the grooves you did in 7 and 9?

Now take it to the bridge past the post office you funky buzzard...

i got some bosphorus traditionals. the hihats are 14" mediums, the ride's a 22" medium, and crash is a 17". the kit's gretsch catalina club + gretsch round badge maple snare (14"). glad you liked it :), i've spent some time tuning it (especially the bass drum).

ahhhhh! Your drums sound even nicer in these recordings! I love both...hip-33 was such a cool sticking, was it something like this?

R RR LRRLRLLRLRRL

And another question: How would you count that blues? In 6/8 or in a triplet context, so in a triplet-based 4/4? Can you do both?

Karl

kacperivo
05-21-2007, 05:16 PM
haha perfect Karl! that's the sticking ;). i kinda come up with it lately, and i thought it sounds pretty cool when played on hihat and the snare (i tried with cowbell, rims, and the hihat stand, and it fits every context pretty well). on a side note, i personally like it when the groove starts with a simple 1 2 on hihat and the bass drum, cause you can play a bass over it (you play a note on 1, and for example a note an octave higher on 2 - sounds cool, when drums do almost the same :))

with the blues, i usually consider such grooves as a 6/8, it's easier for me :).

yeah! I love the new things, especially the cowbell licks. Though maybe you could work a bit more on latin grooves to expand your cowbellish horizon? =)

Keep it up.
