Why do people need to spend a ton of money on cymbals? Is it really necessary?

Cheap cymbals sound cheap. Why do people buy expensive cars? Cheap cars get you the same place right?
People buy expensive cars because the preform better. As a musician, you want your instruments to preform as good as possible. It makes your music sound better.
So if doling out 200 bucks for some fancy sheet metal means buying good sounding cymbals (since you are in the business of making sound ) thats what you have to do.

The only thing that matters when buying cymbals is to match your wallet with your ears. If you find what you like at a low price then smile and be happy.

Why dont you use crappy sheet metal cymbals whenever your practing then get out the k customs for a gig? Why do people practice with their good cymbals?

I like using good cymbals for practice because good cymbals make you feel better about your playing, thus supporting faster improvement.

I just did a sizable investment recently on some new Zildjian K cymbals but in the process of doing price comparisons, checking on various local dealer price matching and percentage discounts on top of that I saved myself a bundle overall. Doing a bit of research and leg work can go along way well purchasing new cymbals $$ wise.
I considered this an investment in the music which is the bottom line since to me quality of sound is of the utmost importance in professional playing situations. In this case I was looking for some all new sounds to experiment with and was prepared to pay the price which I did well still saving some $$ due to smart shopping around in the process. Pretty happy with the outcome overall.

Well you were the one who asked why people spend a lot of money on cymbals? This would cost MORE than just using the higher-class cymbals. Also- Get cymbals from Guitar Center and get the extended warranty if you are going all out and getting A's Z's K's AA's AAX's... etc. I have cracked many cymbals. This is most likely due to my set being in a secluded room where my neighbors don't care what they hear, along with my ears being covered by full on headphones. You tell the warranty company that they broke, they send boxes and cover shipping, and you get a check in the mail.
If money is the problem, thats the best way.

Well when your a kid you suffer through playing with junk cymbals, and junk drums. Then you grow up, and enough with that crap!
When the cymbals sound like magic it just makes playing your instrument that much more enjoyable, and that is why we play right?
I say, buy what sounds the best to you....and enjoy.

No its not necessary.
But it just so happens that the better sounding cymbals are worth more.
idk sounds like common sense to me.

All I can say is I'd rather pay a bit extra for a cymbal I'd prob end up getting anyway, otherwise I'd probably end up cringing every time I hit a cymbal. 99% of my playing is cymbals or snare, so I'd rather spend my money there than anywhere else. I don't practice with cheap cymbals, because if I did I probably would never practice. I've never broken a cymbal, so I'm not worried that by practicing with my gigging cymbals I'll mess something up.

I think it is not always neccessary to buy expencive cymbals. If they can please you with its sound it will be cool.
It is about what you like and prefer.
After playing and playing you develope an ear and automatically preferences. Maybe the durability of expencive cymbals is higher but anyway: Take what you like.
Don`t buy a cymbal just because there is a K on it or because it looks beautiful if you actually don`t like the sound.

Speaking of cymbals, Tooldrums, Danny Carey bought a ton of expensive Paistes and melted them and formed drums from them....

If you are just playing in your basement or just starting to gig, a set of B8's will do you just fine.
My rule of thumb with gear, if your not making enough money gigging to pay for the top of the line gear, you probably dont need it.

If it sounds good to their ear, then that is the cymbal they should buy.

I feel it is necassary to always buy top quality cymbals and other stuff for your drums. I think the because you and everyone else wants you to get the absolute best sound you can out of your drums (for your sake and everybody elses).

Is it necessary to spend 7 bucks on a pair of sticks when fallen branches are free? I think it is.
I spend money on all kinds of cymbals because I like different sounds and like to have professional equipment.

man how long have you been playing??you dont need A Customs if your only starting out etc....theyre great cymbals...but if your just a beginner or ehatever you risk destroying a huge investment....but if your a great drummer explain to your father its an investment....and teach him how to play drums too?haha!
And to your original question: its like drinking. When your a kid, an dont have id and cant buy your own beer you manage to get your grubby little paws on stuff like Dutch Gold,Bavaria, etc.(cheap irish beers!!haha!), you drink it,(maybe vomit),and learn it tastes bad.....then later on,when your more experienced and have a more refined taste, and wallet...you can go buy wine, and guinness, and bud. Some people stick with the cheap lager because they like it....most dont....hahahaha!

15 years old. I did some work around the house taking out a japanese maple stump for that i got a P122TW double pedal. Also i dug 3 holes for planting 3 other trees and for that i got 2 cymbals, 16" & 18" crashes inexpensive zbt rock. They sound good but the don't last that long only about a year. I have been playing for about 2 years now. I would really like some quality cymbals but i really dont want to work for them.

Of course you don't want to work for them, I do not want to work for my gear either but I have to, and I am sixteen....
I would rather play my drums everydag after school, but I have to go to work...!
Sorry for being such a b****, but I hate when people are spoiled and just get whatever they want, for free... I am NOT saying that is how your
situation is though...!

Why dont you use crappy sheet metal cymbals whenever your practing then get out the k customs for a gig? Why do people practice with their good cymbals?
Why don't Nascar or Indy drivers practice with crappy old Toyotas from the 70's? Why don't violinists practice on a cheap toy instrument? Why don't runners practice with five dollar water shoes?
Cymbals sound different and feel different. Practicing with crap cymbals will teach you to play crap cymbals, that is, beat the crap out of them, since you can't get different, usable sounds from them with different types of touch. (Sadly, though, you can't actually beat the crap out of them <--- pun inteded.)
Why the heck should anyone practice with a different set of cymbals (other than practical reasons)?

I use the same cymbals on live shows.rehearsals, sessions, recordings, practice etc...
It all part and parcel with the same process of getting to know your instrument and developing YOUR sound.

Right, I feel I have something to say here:
Im 15, 16 in a few months.
I have been playing for three years.
I have woked as a Session Drummer, I have played Tons of live gigs.
I have recorded on about 35-40 tracks at studios.
I have been in numerous bands over the years.
My cymbals?
They are PLANET Z'S!!!!!!
What is wrong with your cymbals?
I am trying to get decent cymbals, and for this to happen, I have had to give up so much, and I am going to have to work for the whole last summer holiday Im EVER going to have.
I think you should weigh up what your working with, and think of the possiblilties of what you've got. If you feel you really need the A's Dont bug your parents.
They work all day everyday to support you, feed you and house you, not to buy cymbals.
Just a thought, sorry if I come across as a B*****.

Look mate.
When I was 15, (not that many years ago) I was in the same situation as you. I had a set of Sabian B8's, a crap drum kit and a few other assorted bits and bobs. I was happy with what I had, most certainly, it meant I could play the drums and enjoy myself.
When Christmas and birthdays came around I would save my money, and I saved my money from when I was very small, I got a savings account when I was 4 years old. Whenever I felt the need to buy another cymbal, I spent the money that I'd saved, I didn't bug my parents. Now I have a setup. Istanbul Ride, Sabian HH Hi Hats and AAX Crash plus I had enough money in that account to buy my current drum kit (Tamburo Ash 422 AM) which, although not a high-end kit, is a fistful of quality and sound.
The moral? Don't expect your parents to buy you everything. I spent my savings and now I have a job. I go out shopping after I get paid and buy guitar effects pedals, but I know that I've earned that money and I know that therefore, I have a right to spend it. The only time my parents ever bought me anything was when they offered to, not when I asked.
A bit of patience will get you an awfully long way.
