Coated G2 or not

Im thinking of upgrading my M-Birchs tom heads and like Evans G2s but I dont know the difference in sound between coated or non coated. Also what resos would work well with them?

I think your choosing a fantastic batter head for your birch kit. Birch tend to be a bit brighter sounding and the coated g2's will surley bring some warmth into the sound. The coating will also take away a small amount of volume but not enough for you to really notice such as ec2 coated heads do. A good reso head to match will be clear g1's. they will give you plenty of sustain and you'll have a wide tuning range with this combo from low and fat to high and singing. Good luck.

Either a G1 or a Resonant Clear/Glass ..which I have on my Pacific 10 and 12" toms...very nice!

I have Coated G2's on my Tama Birch's and they sound phenomenal. I use G1 clear on the bottom side.

My rockstar is a fusion sized kit but i keep it tuned fairly low and the heads sound great. Good durability. Easy to tune.

I've got coated G2s on batter, G1s on the reso. The kit is a Yamaha Birch Custom Absolute and it sounds and feels great. My toms are an inch larger/deeper than most fusion kits and run 10x12 11x13 14x14 16x16 and I tune a tad bit higher than many, but the kit is monsterous when its mic'd up, and easy to maintain pitch.

I agree with everyone else. The G2 coated will give you a lower fundamental pitch than you would with a clear head or a single ply head.

I've been using Evans coated G2's for a long time. They sound great on both my Ludwig maple and birch kit. For resonant, I'd go with either the Evans resonant glass or genera resonant. You won't be disappointed.

Coated heads ARE the heads to buy and clears sound a bit plasticky if you get what i am saying. But luckily heads dont cost too much.

Not true. Thin and clear heads can be tuned lower, while double and coated heads need more tension to open up. If you want the lowest picth, get a 1 ply clear, but it will ring a lot. G2 coated will have many less overtones but the pitch will be (a bit) higher. Best bet is to go middle road, 1 ply coated. The coating takes away most annoying overtones and can be tuned lower than a 2 ply. If you want less sustain, particularly on large toms, pick a 2 ply clear reso.

I have to disagree (respectfully) But ... I have always used coated g1 batters on my 8 and 10 toms and coated g2's for my 12, 14,16. The coated g1's not only have a better feel to them on smaller toms but they just tune up and sound better on them too. I seem to get a quicker response from the 1 ply's on smaller toms.
