Hi everyone!
I was just practicing and thought about the board, yup I have a question.
During grooves I am having trouble accenting off beats on the snare with the left hand. Always brought the right hand over from the hihat before, but it is time.
My question is how do I develop the independence to feel & hit these offbeats?
Play 8th notes with my right hand and 16th notes with my left?
Thanks!

just remember when you play these its the same thing as playing staight singles. yopu can think of it like than and just find grooves with the snare on the off beat and kill it, play it till you can play it backwards, inside out and sideways. they should just come into feel over time i dont think this is something you can force
Try this exercise its great for learning how to throw in accents wherever you want!
play sixteenth notes at a low volume(ghostnotes) with accents on each quarter note for 1 measure then move the accent to the E for 1 measure then to the & for 1 measure and finally the A constantly switching the accent from right to left hand. REPEAT REPEAT REPEAT!
EXERSISE: make sure your ghost notes stay low and even(try to complete this exercise from beginning to end without stopping)
1-e-&-a-2-e-&-a-3-e-&-a-4-e-&-a
1-e-&-a-2-e-&-a-3-e-&-a-4-e-&-a
1-e-&-a-2-e-&-a-3-e-&-a-4-e-&-a
1-e-&-a-2-e-&-a-3-e-&-a-4-e-&-a
Hope this helps!

Thanks guys!
I am going to print out that exercise and work it out EVERY DAY! - YEAH!
Im glad that helps! Try this out next. On each accent instead of a single stroke put a diddle(2 strokes) in its place(if you dont understand I'm sorry Im not sure how else to explain it but i can try if you want)

Here's a pretty basic (in terms of sticking) paraddidle groove I came up with that I think could help with snare offbeats. The trick with this one is to remember to play out the accents on the snare and keep all the other notes ghosted while trying to get the groove to have a certain "funk" feel to it. As you start to get the basic feel for the groove add in things like bass drum notes and opening the hi hat where you think it fits best. I'll do my best to make it as clear as I can.
Captial letters show accents
(Right hand on hi hat, Left on snare)

Exactly what I was going to suggest. In addition, try tacking on to the end the same pattern, but with 2 sets of 16ths in each rep, and then 1 set:
1-e-&-a-2-e-&-a-3-e-&-a-4-e-&-a
1-e-&-a-2-e-&-a-3-e-&-a-4-e-&-a
1-e-&-a-2-e-&-a-3-e-&-a-4-e-&-a
1-e-&-a-2-e-&-a-3-e-&-a-4-e-&-a
Once you can get through the entire exercise consistently (and it sounds good - taps one height, accents one height), then you've got the idea.
FYI: It's called the grid, and you apply it a ton of ways. Try it with triplets, or doubling (or flamming, or cheezing, or... you get the idea) each bolded note instead of accenting it.
