nylon sleeves for hi-hats

why do we not use nylon tubes/sleeves inbetween the top hi-hat and the hi-hat clutch (as i think it's called)??? is it a sound-related thing??? i just don't like the thought of my hats grinding against metal, although it seems to be the norm...

This is only a guess but since, but if I understand your question, I think the fact that the hats stay relatively flat there isn't much of a chance for keyholing. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I've been wondering the same thing. I have a couple layers of electrical tape wrapped around mine, but I'm still kinda worried about it rubbing against the metal.

I tried putting some plastic tubing from the hardware store around the clutch, but the cymbal hole isn't wide enough for that to work. I've seen a site or two suggesting plumber's tape as a good protector.

Gruntersdad: I see what you mean, but the hats move when you hit them, so some friction is bound to occur.

Yep, I thought about that Vel and looked at my drop clutch holder also and its the same way..threaded on both ends but smooth in the middle and not big enough for anything but some tape...Keep this open and we may get a definitive answer.

yeah that's what i meant.
mine are on the sloshy side though so for me it's a bit of a concern.

My guess: the bronze is tougher than that cast white metal the hat clamp is made from. You just don't see/hear about keyholed hats, do you?

i worry about the same thing with my new paistes. cymbalcellar has had some with keyholeing and ive seen them on ebay so it can happen.

I've seen quite a few keyholed hi-hats. The lack of "sacrificial" plastic sleeves just mystifies me...

my hats are getting wider at the hole and arent perfectly round anymore, but i think that they dont use the plastic because of the fact that hi-hats are thicker cymbals than most.
