My Sonor SQ 2 has finally arrived after waiting 4 months and well worth it.
I got Heavy Birch with Rosewood veneer inside and out.
1420 Bass Drum
5x14 Artist Maple snare (main)
4.25X12" SQ 2 snare (left side)
8X8 Tom
8X10 tom
8X12 Tom
14x14 FT
16X16 FT
The sound is bright and puchy with a little sustain. Lots of volume as well.
I'll post some sound clips next week when I have more time.

Eye Candy:

Man I can't tell if I like the outside or the inside of the drums the best. AMAZING dude.
I just wonder about the massiveness of the tom hardware...but they are beautiful no doubt.

Thanks guys, that tom holder is a bit overdesigned, but those toms are going anywhere. When I play the kick drum hard they don't even move a millimeter!
Great stuff, Sonor makes. I have had this kit in my posession for only a few hours and I don't think I'm going to sleep to well tonight!

Umm, sorry to disappoint you.. but i think those were shipped to the wrong address. Just pack them back up and send them to my house. Sorry for the confusion.

simply amazing... gotta say, i was surprised to see that one of us here had an SQ2.. but glad. its cool to see them. if i had any amount of money to spend on a set, i think i'd go SQ2

Nice looking set, I like the natural wood color , i've never seen that before. Badass!

Edit- Also the way the bass drum's legs and the tom holders look is crazy , never seen that before

One of my favourite kits on the forum. Are there specs of th cymbals? The finish and the offset lugs on the snare look too good!

That's very, very nice.

Jojo Mayer is doing a workshop here in Cape Town next week and yesterday I saw the kit he'll be using in a local music store. It's also a Sonor in an exotic veneer, similar sizes to yours. But it's not an SQ2. Probably about half as nice as yours. Enjoy them.

05-04-2007, 09:19 AM
Call me picky, or whatever but ummmm........don't you think that a brand new SQ2 deserves to be set up with cymbals that have at least been dusted off sometime this year??? I do. Maybe I'm just a little strange......or a neat freak.....POLISH YOUR DAMN CYMBALS!!! There I said it and I'm gonna go now.

Woah! I bet they sound sweet!!!! The picture of the U.P.S guy is priceless, it seems really wierd to see the same coating on the inside as the outside. They are beautiful drums for sure x happy playing!!!!

Simply gorgeous kit!

Congratulations, youve just purchased one of the best kits in the world IMO. And that setup couldnt have been cheap. Were you happy with your service through Sonor?

I know youll love them about as much as I love my Designers. :)

PS - Im LOVING the blanched roots artist snare. You really ARE a Steve Smith fan!

I wish I had a car big enough to steal all of that.

Stevesmithfan, we've known each other on here for a long time, and you've always had those drool-inducing Ludwigs, but these Sonors are honestly the next level. This is some serious work and you must be exceptionally proud to own such magnificent drums. They're really amazing and if they sound even half as good as they look, well. Then you're sorted for life.

I had to make a second post sorry. BUt I think that set deserves inclusion in every topic on the forum. You could put up the same pictures and call it my "new" cymbal set up, or the same pics, in the other gear section and ask, what pedals should I use.? And what heads, and do 5A sticks with vertical grain go well with these drums. Amazing.

And he'd get away with it too; in territory where very few would.

Thanks guys for all those replies. Hi MFB, nice to hear from you again. I finally reached nirvana with these dums, I'm definetely done buying drums for a long time.
the Artist series snare is wonderful, but it is getting replaced (temporarily) with an SQ 2. X Ray 5x14" Acrylic snare.
Now I've got to go and dust those Zildjians!

That is truly incredible. What a nice choice. When I tried those SQ2 the only theing I knew was slobbering.
Seriously, that looks and sounds great.

Congrats.

PS: What did you do with the old Ludwigs?

Wow...amazing. THAT is a real custom kit. How many plies are the Heavy Birch drums?
I'm also interested to hear what the 14X20 kick sounds like.
Congratulations on a masterpiece that should last more than a lifetime.

Thanks guys.
I'm keeping the Ludwigs for gigs.
The heavy shells are 12 ply and sound amazing.
I love the 14x20 as opposed to deeper kicks for instant punchy sound. I've a small cut in the head with the mic just on the outside to get some extra deplth.
The SQ 2's are custom built to your specifications with the SQ 2 configurator on the Sonor website.

The Sonor factory is 5 hours driving time from Berlin. What is the name of the town the Sonor factory is located? Do you know?

Yes, there are a number of woods to choose from, as well as veneers inside & out, & laquers too. Top of the line stuff, very pricey too.

Actually the funniest thing I've seen all week was at Guitar Center... Apparently a very short lived employee tried polishing a nice aged Zildjian K..... he thought it was dirty.... ::sigh:: I've actually never polished my Paiste Sigs and I never will.

I'll say it again... that's an amazing kit. It actually has me thinking that I need to run out and get a vacuum rig so I can try playing with veneers next.

definitally an amazing drum set.

Finish is stunning, and the hardware is quite interesting.
DONT POLISH YOUR CYMBALS!!!

I think cymbals look much better tarnished, just gives an impression that theres a darker sound, and most of the time there is

just curious but how did you get them? can you order them off the sonor website?

Stevesmithfan
05-06-2007, 11:18 PM
To order a Sonor SQ 2 you go to the Sonor website under the SQ 2 configurator, create a drumkit. Print out the config. and take it to your Sonor dealer. The config. will have a reference number. Your dealer will send the reference # along with the details of your kit to Sonor. It's easy.
Go to the sonor website and create your dream drumset, just like you would with a DW Kitbuilder, it's a lot of fun!

GRUNTERSDAD
05-06-2007, 11:24 PM
I did that and my dream set would cost me 7800.00. Waiting on the lottery.

Stevesmithfan
05-06-2007, 11:28 PM
They're pricey but worth it. The price you got from the SQ 2 configurator is suggested list. You should get a discount of 20% more or less from the list price, That still makes them quite expensive.

Hey dude,

The Sonor guys are real artists. Top quality wood and chrome there mate. 12 ply? That sounds insane!!!...in a good way! ;)

Personally, not a finish that floats my boat, but I cannot agree more with the sentiments above - A stunning piece of German craftsmanship!

...or as they say over there - "Vorsprung Durch Technik"
