hey people,
i have a question about snare drumming(didn't see that one coming, huh? :P). I've been playing drums for about 6 years now and i want to start practicing snare drumming more. The reason being that i want to join the swedish army's drum corps when i turn 19. So, i have about 4 years to get good at snare drumming. What should I practice to gain speed, technique and showmanship? And also if you guys have some practice music sheets or w/e that would also be helpful, thanks :)

Could you not get a list of what the now play and practice that. I'm sure it will change in 4 years but at least you will know what's their normal fare.

Hmmm... Dave Weckl's video "How to develop technique" is a classic first effort to start developing your stick's control and hand/feet technique. Also look for Joe Morello's instructional video (excellent tips there). Art Verdi's recommendations to achieve better speed are also great - Derrick Pope also gives great advices! - Pipe Snare drummers like Jim Kilpatrick, Jeff Queen, Casey Brohard and Rick Beckham are also great fountains of inspiration - as far as hand's technique and rudiments of all kinds go.

PS. Also look for ALL Buddy Rich's videos as well (some of them are absolutely unreal in the hand-technique/speed/dynamics/rudiments department! (hehe) - This is good for now). Also try to work on your left hand's weak points. Good luck! :]

PPS. Ohh, also look for "Par Petrillo - Snare Drum Rudiments", an excellent snare instructional video! - a bit boring, but still great! Nonetheless. Now, go work! (hehe) :]

"14 Modern Contest Solos for Snare Drum" by John S. Pratt

This book is probably the best purchase I have made to this day. 14 different rudimental snare solos; some are very traditional, others not so much. I highly recommend buying this book, sitting down, and just working straight through it.

As far as other material... anything by Marty Hurley is good (Phantom Phire is a beast- just played that for Solo and Ensemble).

Also, check out rowloff.com for lots and lots of rudimental solos.

Probably the best is to find someone who was in a drum corp already, you can learn stuff form online and different things, but that doesn't mean you're going to make it, they always have super weird techniques and it's best to have someone teach you those times things, a person with experience that can watch you in real live, not over the internet.

Snarescience is a very cool site. I know the guy who runs it, he is a MONSTER drummer as well as a great guy. The site itself is in its infancy but its a great resource for rudimental style drumming.

Hej!!!
One of my teachers just moved to Stockholm. He was playing in the GSO and recently got the job in the "Filan". He's a technique freak and extremely good. Did a lot of snare drumming before getting in the orchestra. You'd love him.
P.M me if you're interested, I can give you his phone number.

MVH Göteborg!!!
