I'm looking for a pair of 13" hats with a mellow tone and solid chick. Not too bright, not too dry, and certainly not too loud.
What's you opinion on K/Z and K mastersound hats? Do they still come in brilliant finish?
I've also spotted K light hats and was thinking of a hybrid K/A custom hat.

Hmmm...Maybe some 13" Quick Beats? The holes in the bottom might give that sound you're looking for. Also, some 2002 Medium hats? Are you looking into one brand?

You also might be able to pick up an orphan Mastersound or Soundedge Hi-hat on Ebay pretty cheap, and then pair it with whatever you want, from a 14" K Dark Crash (which is what I use as a hi-hat top, along with an HH regular top as the bottom) to the hi-hat top you've already got.

I own two pairs of the K/Z hi hats and I like them.
You can sound preview the 13" K/Z hats here (http://www.zildjian.com/EN-US/products/productDetail.ad2?catalogID=1009&typeID=7&productID=1390) and the mastersounds here (http://www.zildjian.com/EN-US/products/productDetail.ad2?catalogID=1009&typeID=7&productID=1392).
By the description of Zildjian's website, neither hi hats are available in brilliant finish anymore. I'm really bummed that alot of the A series cymbals are no longer available in the brilliant finish as well. I think the 13" quick beats will be too bright and high pitched. I still own my set of 13" brilliant quick beats I bought 12 years ago.
Best of luck.

I really hate the Zildjian soundfiles. How can you get anything from 1 open hi hat hit!?

A much better representation of the hats (and loads of other cymbals if you care to look around)
I would love a pair of K/Z nice mix of a complex K and very heavy Z bottom. Gotta be good!

Here's some good sounds files of various Zildjian K 's including 13"and 14" K light hats and other K Custom and K Constantinople cymbals inc. other hats:
http://www.cymbalsonly.com/cymbals/zildjian/zildjian.htm
When I was putting my new cymbal set together I tried out a couple of pairs of the new K light hats the 13" and 14" models. Both sounded very good. Not the particular sound I was after since I went with 14" K Custom Special Dry hats but the new K lights sound like they could fit the bill you are looking for MadJazz. Very warm and mellow with a nice foot sound a nice with a stick closed or partially open sound too. I tried a couple of pairs of the K/Z 13" and 14" models too which were nice but my personal preference would lean toward the K lights from the desciption you listed you are after in a pair of hats.

This is a pretty good idea! You could buy the K Mastersounds and find an orphaned Z Dyno beat bottom. They also used to sell these Dyno Beats in pairs, so you might give that a thought as you would have two cymbals to choose a potential bottom Z Hi Hat cymbal. I have heard the Zildjian Quick Beats and have never heard 14" QB pair that I like. However, I have heard some very good sounding 13" Quick Beats, which was the size Zildjian listed as Vinnie Colaiuta prefering at one time.
