Love it.
What snare did you use? From what I`ve heard (since it is played with brushes) it sounds very vintage...
And when the soli began you played the groove ala breve...?
Sounds pretty.

It's a new Black Beauty with a Fibreskyn Ambassador. Note, though, that I always turn my snares off when I use brushes.

As the solo is beginning, the form of the song is finishing, so I start to set up the double-time. Then, the solos are double-time.

Good point...and yeah, it sounds nice!
Why do you do that actually? Do you like the sound more? Or do you find the snares distracting?
but yes, nice...have to try that. :-)

I was talking to Joe Farnsworth at a drum clinic and he said he does and all the "old" guys did it. So, I tried it. Counter-intuitively, you get a _much_ richer swish sound with the snares off.

Thanks alot for the info!!!
I will try it and will see how it sounds and fits in a tune...thanks again.
Tony WIlliams also did it as far as I know. A prospos Tony: What do you think about his opinion not to use the cymbals when playing with brushes?

As you can tell from my playing, I don't agree ;) However, I don't think I you should ride on a cymbal with a brush - it doesn't sound too good. I like using a sizzle cymbal as an accent. Also, I like dragging the metal loop of the brush (the back) on the cymbal as an effect.

hehe, yes I agree that riding on a cymbal with brushes doesn`t sound so good. Though I also like to use a sizzle cymbal for light crashing...btw: Which sizzle cymbal do you use?
Overall you can get so many tones and effects from brushes, can`t you? Once my drum teacher`s shown me some effectful things like rolling the brush over the drum or this "butterfly" hitting effect. (hard to describe :-)
However, thank you again for the inspiring tips and playing!

It's a 19" Bosphorus Turk.
