Where everyone shares their bass/tom/snare combos. I'm looking to expand my vocabulary. The main ones that I incorporate into my playing are 4/2's, 4/3's, 2/2's, 3/2's. Any other suggestions on expanding my fill vocabulary?

I don't even know what that means XD

Do you mean like 4/2 as in 4 on the snare then 2 on the bass drum?

Yep. First number is on the snare, second is on bass. Double or single kick.

Don't restrict yourself to mathmatically precise combos, get some reading material like Modern Reading Text in 4/4 by Louis Bellson to help increase your rhythmic vocabulary. Linear Time playing by Gary Chaffee has some very goodhand and foot combo exercises in it.

Apparently you're into maths, so here's an idea you could try. Count from 11 to 99, and you'll get plenty of different combos. Then play them as 8th notes, triplets, 16ths, quintuplets, sextuplets, septuplets, 32nd notes...

Thanks wavelength. Nope. I don't restrict myself to anything. I've just become interested in taking different combos and making them fit where you would least expect it. Kind of like "Wow, this guy's going to do a really lame cliche fill. Oh, never mind, he did some crazy combo I can't even comprehend." Dig? My buddy Eddie showed me one that goes "Snare tom tom, bass bass bass, tom tom, bass bass bass, tom, bass bass snare."
It's really hard to explain how it fits and such when you're not showing someone in person. Sorry about the long post. ~

I don't get it. You're using the same spacing between all the notes? Doesn't sound that exciting.

i'm with jonescrusher on this... why not play things like ruffs ot flams. when you say 4/2 are you talking about 6 even strokes at say 16ths? what about something like

4(32nds) 2(16ths)/2(32nds)4(16ths)

this could get too confusing.

if you want to increase your fill vocab just practice rudiments and then breaking them around the kit

I'm not saying that I'm a math drummer and I have no feel. I was just wondering if anyone else does these types of fills, so I could maybe get some ideas and build off of them. Actually, I enjoy playing more in the pocket grooves. But I do play in a Meshugga type band, and I think the combos I'm trying to learn would fit well with the odd time that we're playing in.
